Question for those of you that change your own oil on your trucks, other than peace of mind knowing that everything is buttoned up properly and no bolts/screws/plugs are broken or missing, what's the benefit? I used to do it on my old car years ago, but that was before I had a truck that requires 8qts of synthetic. Cost of that much oil/filter would seem to be close to what the Jiffy Lube type places charge(and they offer coupons). Just curious on the board's opinion...

I hit a take 5 give me the cheapest shite you got and role on. Not planning on running my truck for over 100 thousand so I'll let the next guy worry with it and save my money

Last time I had someone do it at a shop, they tightened the oil filter so tight the gasket stuck to the truck next time I changed the oil. Three of us tried to get the filter off before we finally had to use a cheater bar.

1/4 million miles rolling like new. Take care of my own stuff for the most part with a single trusted mechanic for anything major.

I now have more money in my pocket to spend on outdoor shite I probably don't really need.

In my F250 I save myself about $65 every time I change my own oil which is every 5000 miles, plus I know my drain plug won't fall out, or my oil filter over tightened, etc. Every other oil change(every 10,000 miles) I change oil and filter, air filter, and both fuel filters and save myself about $150 by doing so.

Use a hammer and poke a screwdriver through the filter. Then use the screwdriver as a pry bar to spin it. Not saying they should've made it that tight but this messy process is much easier than getting a cheater bar and stuff.

I love changing my own oil because I know exactly how much I put in it and exactly how I put the drain plug on and exactly how tight the oil filter is on. I also like to run some sea foam through the upper intake manifold and crankcase before doing the oil change. So I put the sea foam in 3-4 days before the change. I doubt it makes a huge difference but it gives me peace of mind.

Also if you use premium oil (I run Amsoil) you can be a little bit more frugal with the mileage interval even though the 5000 mark is ideal. I just haven't seen the benefit of changing oil that often and my motor has almost 110k on it.

I change my own. I could probably get it done cheaper or for about the same price but I like getting under my vehicle and seeing how things are looking.

I don't want someone trying to beat a time clock on how quickly they need to get my vehicle in and out of their service bay.

Thanks for the replies guys

I can definitely understand the peace of mind aspect of it. Was just curious of the cost savings, esp since the amount I have to put in isn't a set amount that the sell at stores(ie would have to buy 2 gal and have 2 qt left over, or 1 gal and 3qts).

I don't trust the lowest denominator of society to work and maintain my vehicle. Plus those cheap lube places use the worst/cheapest oil and filters possible. I can change my own oil within 30 minutes which is faster than driving it somewhere, waiting and driving home. Plus, cars are one of my biggest hobbies and I enjoy working on them.

Because I'm able to. I do every piece of maintenance I can around my house and my vehicles because they are my responsibility, I want to make sure it's done right, and it saves money.

I do however leave the certified stuff to certified people.

Benefit is you get an opportunity to inspect everything. Get your oil and filter at Walmart. I use Quaker State Ultimate Durability and Fram Ultra filter. Both cheap and close to the best quality you can buy

Do some research brah. Fram Ultra is a reinforced synthetic filter. The AC Delco ones are garbage

Motorcraft are the best I've found yet for the money. Metal cap and all that jazz.

Knowing what oil is going in my truck/car. I use only synthetic high mileage oils. Mobile 1, valvoline, amsoil, etc. I dont use any cheap stuff about to cross over 300k miles in my honda car and both my trucks have no problems around 150k miles. Most oil places buy barrels of the cheap stuff. If you dont plan to keep vehicle for over 200k miles then the cheap oils will be fine.

If you just want to do regular oil there's not muh cost savings, huge savings in synthetic. Most places charge $80-90 for synthetic changes instead of the $30-40 for regular. If you require more than 5 quarts most places charge you but I've never dealt with that never having a vehicle that did. You can get top of the line synthetic oil and filter for $40. So yes, I save $50 by doing the oil myself.

It's also IMO a good thing to take 30 minutes to look your vehicle over on your own every 3-4 months or whatever you do your oil. It's not that I don't trust the other guys as much as I like to take the time to look it over myself and that's a great time to do it.

Get yourself some of those drive up jacks for $50, you can change your oil in 15 minutes easy. It really takes me longer to change it then it does to drive somewhere. Time wise it's the same.
