So I've got this 2006 f150 with the 4.6L V8. Started idling rough and sputtering a little. Check engine light came on. Code reader says IAC (idle air control) is out. Too bad this truck has an electronic throttle body. Replaced that, problem persists. New code is cylinder 5 misfire. Going to change the plug and coil. My question is, is this something anybody has gone through? Is there something else I should be looking for?

You saying you have a new throttle body on there now? Don't buy the cheap Chinese coil packs. Amazon usually has the best price on Motorcraft coil packs.

The fuel pump driver module is also prone to fail. It's mounted above the spare tire. The module corrodes allowing moisture to get in causing problems.

I've had 3 COPs go bad in my 2000 F150 5.4L. All 3 times she went into Limp Home mode. Never had the IAC code pop.

Truck's been parked for a long time now..trying to get the time to get it all fixed on her. Probably the last gas burner I own.

Buy motorcraft plugs and packs and change them all. Bite the bullet now so it won't bite you later.

Had this on an 01 F150. Pulled the coil and boot, made sure everything was dry, added dielectric grease before reinstall, cleared everything up.

Changing the plug and coil should work but you may try just the clean and lube. Those coils are not cheap.

4.6 has one piece plugs.

9/10 when one of these motors starts acting like this it's usually the PCV hose elbow leaking at the back of the manifold. They get a hole in them and create a bad vacuum leak.

The plugs and the coils can both cause the problems you are describing. Had a coil pack go out on my 04 5.4 that made it idle rough and run poorly. On my 09 5.4 the plugs wore out and caused the same problem.

My neighbor has a ford truck like yours. Every warning light in the dash is on. It's a real pile of shite. Good luck.

04-06 Ford F150 Service Manual 4.2 4.6 & 5.4 in the link. Should also be good for 07-08 since not much changed in those years. It's a big file.

My 02 Expedition had plug and coil issues that resulted in specific cylinder codes. They would go out one at a time about 2-6 months apart. After the third time, I had the mechanic change the rest. Cheaper to do it all at once because it may keep happening and $ labor > $ parts.

Had a similar problem on my 07 F-150 with the 5.4. Changed out the plugs, which is a pain in the arse (took about 10 hours), but that didn't help. Ended up being the catalytic converters. The only code it threw while troubleshooting was a cylinder 1 misfire, also.

Had a 06 mustang with the 4.6l.

Stupid arse plugs.

They make a tool to fish them out when they break. Might as well rent that or see if someone has one you can borrow.

Mine was at the body shop and wouldn't start even though I drove there to drop off. Was like $300+ because like 2 plugs broke.
