I have a 22" self propelled with Honda motor. It was a reconditioned unit my dad picked up a while ago and gave it to me when we moved into our house 6 years ago until we got something better.

It runs perfect, had the cable to turn it off break, but I just removed it. Honda motors are awesome.

IT is just a MTD mower painted red branded with Troy Built for Lowes. Don't waste your money.

I had a 2005 Troy Bilt with a Honda motor that I just upgraded from.
I sold it for $50... it was still starting on the first pull.

Troy built is Junk, save your coins and invest in something with a honda on it. I own a Johnson Big Wheel mower that had a 4 hp Kohler that ran for 30 yrs! I put a 5.5 hp side shaft honda on it in '85 and never looked back. Never a problem with Honda.

Have a Troy Bilt push mower. It's about 8 years old. Still cranks easily and runs great. I've also had decent luck with their string trimmers. Been having the same one for 7 years and the carb just recently went bad on it. But I rebuilt it and it still works (admittedly not as good as it used to since the carb rebuild). I've heard they don't last, but that hasn't really been my experience.

I repaired a lot of them and 99% of the problems are customers fault (stupidity a lot of people do not know how to take care of equipment).

I do like the Honda and the ohc is a better unit than most Briggs ohv.

For the idiots out there the TB has one of the best vaccum with blade curve to lift the grass better and they do give a better quality of cut.

Husqvarna/ Ariens and Toro does not have this. They are also not bad units but I seem a lot of them due to customer neglect especially the husqvarna all wheel drive. People say it won't work. Hey skippy when I clean the grass around the transmission it magically works fine.

Any homecenters of mass retail unit will get more abuse than a unit bought from a dealer due to who is buying it. Mostly people who do not read directions, abuse the equipment, and leave non ethanol fuel sitting in these units. husqvarna, mtd (Troy-Bilt, yard machine, bolens, cub cadet, white, Columbia), toro, lawn boy, craftsman made by mtd or husqvarna).
80% they leave nonethanol fuel
10% do not change the air filter and dirt gets into the engine at that point it is over with.
10% damage them running over cypress knees, tree stumps, things in the yard and bend the shaft. These Darwin winners think that should be replaced under warranty.

99% of the push mowers will last if
1. Check and replace air filter as needed
2. Clean the grass around the transmission and periodically under the deck if it self propelled some times the belt stretches and they are easy to replace. Some have a deck wash
3. Periodically dump the oil out by opening where you put the oil and put fresh oil typically a small engine oil 10W30 colder climate or 30w. (Hint most engines Honda 10 to 12 ounces and Briggs varies can be up to 12 to 16 ounces. Don't overfill. Best thing is keep the bottle of oil you get with the unit and put the right amount of oil in that bottle to fill up you unit.
4. Sharpen your blade. They have blade sharpening kits. The kit has a stone that fits on your power drill and blade lever. It is cheap reconditioning of the blade.
5. At the end of a season run the bad fuel out of your carb and drain the tank. Honda does offer a shutoff valve for fuel which most Briggs do not have. This keeps fuel from sitting in your carb bowl destroying the parts inside the carb.

If you do small thing like this you can get a lot of mileage out of your residential walk behind mower and yes that includes mass retail units.

Hey thanks to the skippy's of the world that destroy them I have 4 service centers that do well due to people's stupidity. 90% of what I see is skippy error and 10% real mfg defects

I've had one for 4 or 5 years. The only issue I ever had with it was my son using ethanol gas in it. Quick fix and still running great.

1998 Troy built garden tractor. 46" cut. Loved it. Routine maintenance, batteries, belts and new gas lines.

Quit using it last summer after the cutting deck rusted out and won't support the blade pulley.

22HP B&S runs like a champ but it's hard to spend $800 on a new cutting deck.

I think I got my money out of it but after moving to a smaller yard, easier to buy a push mower.

Teah my troy built (honda engine) is still running great after 9 years... im going to buy another one... cant beat the price... i recommend buying a couple extra air filters when u purchase the mower.. Thats the first thing to go bad... that is an easy fix... that and change the oil after the first 5-10 hrs... then it is goood to go

i agree that troy bilt is junk...i had nothing but problems with my 42" cut. think it was 21.5 hp. the "automatic" feature gas pedal with cruise control was pretty cool though. Although i hated the mower itself the briggs engine was solid it was a 2005 and no doubt its still running somewhere i traded it in two years ago for a zero turn
