Makes you wonder how many people would willingly hand over information about which guns they have if asked by the govt.?

You still better check state laws on firearm posession in a vehicle. Louisisna is perfectly fine with you carrying a loaded gun in your car. I assume you'll be going through Arkansas and into MO, so check their laws in transporting firearms.

How so? I've hunted all my life. Have had many shotguns and handguns.

I'm no expert and don't have the knowledge that many here do. I've read here that they aren't "registered"; however, I just called a dealer to ask what exactly they keep in terms of a paper trail.

I do know there is a record of your buying it and the serial numbers tying it to your name. That may not be "registering" it's "traceable". In the scope of this issue being discussed, isn't that the same?

but there is record so for practical matters, isn't that the same.

NRA Gun Laws State-by-State

You should be just fine transporting a gun through Arkansas and Missouri
They have Concealed Carry Reciprocity with Louisiana
Unless you have a Louisiana Concealed carry Permit, do not carry concealed.

Arkansas
quote:

The person is carrying a handgun when upon a journey, unless he is under 18.

Missouri
quote:

Persons twenty-one years of age or older may transport a concealable firearm in the passenger compartment of a vehicle as long as the firearm is lawfully possessed.

By register, the cops can not enter the serial number in a database an see who owns it and they can not type your name in the computer and a list pops up of all the guns you own.

The police can backtrack from the manufacturer to the dealer and then the original gun owner and follow the sales...

Thanks for clarifying wick. Not trying to be difficult or dumb but I still think that's a matter of semantics. Again, maybe cause I equate "registered" to "traceable".

Most guns used in crimes lose that traceability along the way, gun was stolen, sold to someone with no info, etc...

ETA, unless you read message boards or a cop I don't know where else you would learn this. It sure isn't shown on the nightly news...

I was confused recently with a thread about trusts. Can I not legally leave my handguns to my kids, without paperwork, when I die?

That is completely different, I am going from memory but most of this should be accurate. Some guns are NFA, these are not guns you walk in a store to buy. They require a lot of hoops to jump through to buy including a ~6 month wait, background checks, etc. Fully automatic machine guns or guns that shoot more than one bullet with the depression of the trigger, rifles with barrels less than 16" or shotguns with barrels less than 18" silencers and destructive devises. These require a $200 stamp from the ATF and they are registered to you.

This is not something you need to worry about...
