What's the best case/luggage/carrier? Are the $250 dive specific bags worth it? Or should I get a cheap general luggage from department store?

TIA

I just throw everything in a large duffle bag and haven't had any issues. I guess this is a given, but don't try to bring weights.

Mine is similar to this LINK

I have a large mesh backpack for the boat but looking for something that I can check on flights. My regs are really the only item I'm concerned about. The dufflebag would be perfect if it weren't $320.00.

i've always used my mesh bag i carry onto the boat. there is usually enough extra room for some stuff you would need on the plane ride.
where you going?

Checking it on a "OT Trashy" cruise next Sunday and a flight to the Keys in August. I was going to carry on everything but tank/weights. I could probably pack everything into normal size luggage as long as it fits the fins and carry on the smal regulator case.

I have two new atomic regs, if anyone is looking, they are amazing. Highly recommended them. The swivel is a game changer.

I got one of the rolling duffles off eBay. It was only about $50 and I can get 2 sets of gear (bc's, fins, shorties, regs). I found one of the medium sized ones that airlines wouldn't charge extra for.

Couldn't pass it up. $499 for a 7 day out of Nola on the Dream. Going to do two dives in Roatan/Belize/Cozumel.

Large mesh backpack for wetsuit, bc, fins. I put wet stuff in here for return flight. Regs and camera gear go wrapped in clothes in suitcase.

Carry-on regs. Pack rest in regular suitcase. Easiest way i have found.

I have a large mesh bag I bring on the dive boats. I just throw this bag into a large suit case and check it at the airport. I put items I'm worried about breaking in my carry on bag such as dive computer, torches, etc.

Let me know about the diving in Belize when you get back. My wife and I are going there this fall.

Did three dives there a few years back including a night dive. Highly recommend the night dive.

I was making several trips a year carrying my gear and clothes in a wheeled duffle with pull out handle from Walmart, it lasted about 12 years before the zippers started to go out. Packed inside was a small Pelican case with regs, computer, other small or fragile items, and a lightweight mesh bag with shoulder straps for hauling gear to the beach or boat.

No, and the label attracts unwanted attention. As others have said, I wheeled duffel large enough for your BC and other gear and a small carry-on tote for your regs and computers. Of course, this doesn't count camera, housing, ports and strobes. I have a carry-on size rolling bag for that.

The only one of the list I haven't dove is Roatan.

Belize is easily one of my favorites. The amount of coral around the atolls is incredible. We are going back to dive Turneffe again, when you hit the "bottomless" wall, there is a serious drop-off and a current that caries you along and you can hang out at a depth of about 60'.

Highly recommend.

My wife and I took the advanced diving class which required us to buy a primary and backup torches for the course. They were expensive and I want to go on a night dive badly. We will defiantly do it in Belize.

Thanks. I'll look at Turneffe.

Roatan is great. Been with Subway, Bananara, and Barefoot. All 3 were great. Transportation to and from the port can be a little expensive. Subway provides transportation and also has a beach to hang out if you have others in your group not diving.

Went in Belize through the ship and it wasn't that great. Next time I'll book independent.

Most of my international dives have been through cruises because I grew up in nola and I could dive 3-4 ports combined with gear/food/lodging/transportation for half of what it would cost just to fly to one.

I do hope to start taking a few week long trips in the near future as everyone says the sites are much better (or fragile) when you get away from cruise groups.
