transplanting a tree

Anyone ever transplanted a tree, say an oak, that was growing from the midst of another bush? I have an oak growing through the middle of an azalea bush and would rather try to transplant it instead of cutting it out. What's the best time of year for something like that?

In the fall when leaves are off is best time to transplant.

I have done this- wait until leaves, fall, tree grows dormant- make SURE you dig a large enough ball to keep roots in tack, properly dig and transplant and for the first year make SURE You water , water , water-
You can do this late fall but I prefer late Winter - February- when the chance of a rare hard freeze is gone.
This is a lot of work and its much easier to just buy a tree that has a solid root ball in tack

I had 4 camellia bushes in my side yard that I had to move so I could plant a garden. I did it in the middle of summer. Once I got a big, nice hole dug out in a part of the front yard where I wanted them, I carefully dug out a pretty big area around the bush, severing the roots about 2.5' from the center trunk. I took special care to try and leave as many of the small roots intact as possible. Hauled the bushes by hand from the side yard to the front, and covered each of the bases with a mound of dirt. Then I soaked them all and made sure to water them almost every day. I'd say they lasted about two months before they finally bit the dust, so it was pretty solid for two months before I had to pull them up (wasn't even that hard since the roots were all cut already) and then drag them out to the curb.

I'd probably wait until the tree is dormant, which I'd say Dec-Jan to make sure. I have heard of pre-cutting the root ball several months prior to re-locating (but leave the tree in its original spot until time to re-locate), but you might research that yourself. How big and what species is this tree? Might do more damage to the azalea than the tree is worth.
