I just got an english setter and in a few weeks will begin training it on real birds. Wondering where I can get quail or dove or pigeon to begin training. Should I just go out to covey rise and ask them to sell me quail and kill them? I am in a metro area in South Louisiana and can't walk out my door and shoot birds. Any help is appreciated.

Really looking forward to the process of turning this dog into a formidable upland bird dog.

Check your local Craigslist.com under farm & garden or in the search box. You should be able to get them live for 3-5 bucks each.

Thanks. This will be my first time training a dog to hunt and I've been doing research but have not heard of this. Definitely will check it out. I'm pretty excited about all of this. She seems extremely smart at this point(10 weeks old)

Beautiful dog. Aside from that compliment, I have nothing to contribute.

I would probably try to find out if there is an upland bird organization near you...I think there used to be one called Quail Unlimited that had chapters spread out around the country. if you can get hooked up with some folks like that, you can pick up a lot of info.

Quail unlimited has folded, Quail Forever has 2 chapters in the state. One in Baton Rouge, one in Lake Charles, both are semi active. There is a Woodcock Society Chapter located in Lafayette, the have a yearly banquet, which is only a couple of weeks away on January 20th this year.
