My wife's old grand Cherokee is about to die (hopefully sooner than later fricking piece of shite). It is an 06 with the smaller v6 and it doesn't tow shite. I would like her next vehicle to be able to tow our boat if possible. It's a 19'6 sea-pro cc (not bay boat) with a tandem axle trailer. Anyone have any real world experience towing with a newer explorer? I can't find shite online.

My wife tows our Nautic Star 1900 with 150 outboard just fine with her 2011. That was the first of the new ones. Only issue is when backing, she has to turn on the lights, or the surge brakes will activate. Something about the wiring harness.

My wife has a 16 explorer and I would tow a smaller boat with it. I never towed my xpress bay boat with it but I have seen many on the road towing. ours has the towing package with it so I would tow a smaller trailer and boat with it if needed.

just needs a 5 pin.

We are probably getting an explorer in the next year or so. I have asked the guys at my marina driving them and never seem to have an issue. I wouldnt pull on long trips but just pulling down to the ramp, you are good to go

It has the huge round plug on the boat and the car. My Chevy truck doesn't have that issue and the plugs look identical.

It doesnt have either the right connectors or doesnt have the reverse light connected.

The reverse light lead disables the surge brakes

Yeah, I know there is something wrong-there's stuff about it on the net. It's a Ford issue.

Thanks. I think my boat may be at the upper end of what it can pull. I have also yet to see one for sale with the tow package. I need to do some math or go weigh it on some scales I reckon.

What year Explorer? The new ones are based off a Volvo S80 and only come in FWD or AWD.

Look up the Ford D3 platform.
