To go with diesel or stay with gas…

I was looking at ordering a 2022 Silverado 1500. The wait is looking to be 3-4 months. Anyway I found a 2018 2500 hd with everything I’d like to have in a truck. I’ve never owned a diesel truck before and some things I read said that if you don’t tow heavy you can ruin the engine? I tow 5 days out of the week for lawn care but the mower only weighs 1200 lbs plus whatever the trailer weighs (not much). I don’t have a boat but there could be one in the future. Also how much in maintenance could I expect to spend a year on a diesel? Right now I basically just change my oil for my gasser and that’s it. Should I wait and get the 1500 or just go with the HD?

All my friends ran out and bought diesels in 2020/2021 and they’re ALL bitching about fuel cost now. I bought an F150 with the 2.7 because it’s all I need in my business and stuff I do. You won’t ruin a diesel by not towing, but I mean don’t drive around like a grandma babying it, the emissions stuff is finicky on the new diesels. Don’t be afraid to DRIVE it. As for maintenance cost, bring your wallet. Oil changes are easily $100-120 and even though they claim you can go 10,000 miles between changes I would never dream of doing that. 5,000 intervals. Then you have fuel filters that need changing every 10,000. Don’t forget the other costs for 2500 trucks, things like shocks and brakes and stuff that cost way more than any 1/2 ton would. Oh and then there is def coat but a tank will last you every oil change. Still cost though.
Me? I’d buy a half ton and do everything you say you want to do, but don’t be afraid of the diesel, just know they ain’t cheap to maintain.

If you can afford both the 2022 with the new interior. The 2018 Chevy interiors are lame as hell.

I've never heard that.

They do hold a bunch more oil compared to a gas burner.

With that amount of weight, I'd wait for the gas. Diesels shine when pulling heavy loads with the diesel exhaust brake and torque.

I have a diesel that I only drive on longer trips and to haul a 5th wheel and a gooseneck utility trailer.

My boat and small utility trailer for side by side, mower, jet skis, etc always gets hooked up to one of my 1/2 tons.

Go gas if you don’t need the torque or don’t stay on top of maintenance
I have a 2017 f250 with the 6.7 and it’s been a great truck but routine maintenance is expensive. I tow a 5th wheel camper, 50hp tractor w loader and occasionally a small bulldozer(10k).It handles all of them just fine.
I do all the maintenance myself at home . I’ve been trying to find the rotella 5w40 synthetic oil but it’s either non existent or twice the price it usually is. I’ll be using rotella 15w40 this go round. It takes 13 quarts with an $18 filter . I changed the fuel filters last week and that’s $80 every other oil change . It’s not a lot but it is necessary.
Also, fuel is about a dollar a gallon more than gasoline and not available at every station. Just my experience. I definitely enjoy the performance of the truck and won’t be going back to gas for the foreseeable future.

Google the price of injectors for that 2500 and get back with me. If its chump change to you, buy the diesel.

I drive an 02 Excursion with a 7.3. It’s my second 7.3 I also own a 02 F250. Once I went to a diesel I could never go back to a gas truck. The power difference are night and day, but as other people have said maintenance costs and now diesel prices are higher. You can tune a diesel to get way better fuel mileage then a gas truck but you have to delete that def junk off your truck. I have a $200 oil and fuel filter change every 7500 miles. Y

I'll never get a diesel again. Everything is more expensive and the ride sucks compared to a 1500. Oil changes, fuel filters, def... just a PITA.

If you're towing on mostly flat land have you considered a 3/4 ton gasser? I've only heard good things about the new Ford and GM gas engines. The 6.4 hemi is solid but personally would only get a Cummins. A newer 1/2 ton with tow package may fit the bill

Mine doesn’t ride as good as a half ton for sure but the trucks are not in the same league as far as capability. It’s not an apples to apples comparison. I paid it off about 6 months ago so plan on taking care of it and passing it to my son in a couple years.

Yeah I probably won’t go diesel again but mine is 10 yrs old and paid for so it will stay as long as it runs. Performance towing is unmatched that’s not debatable but maintenance and fuel costs are nothing to sneeze at unless you make a damn good living. If I didn’t have a 12k gvw toy hauler I probably would T own a 3/4 ton for that matter. I would think a diesel costs about 20-25% more to operate in today’s economy

I'm having that same question right now. How hard is it to actually delete? Also, as for the Ford death wobble, my boss said he had it with his 2017 KR and put a stabilizer on it and it has fixed it. But it only ever did it once. I had always heard the 2019 f250s were the ones with that problem but I guess its all models.

Realistically, what are maintenance costs differences per oil change cycle? a hundred to two? plus fuel prices?

ETA: Also how many miles on a used diesel truck is too many to be worth buying? In my gas truck brain I see 70k-100k and immediately think "nope" but I hear about people buying those fairly often.

The 6.4 gets some hate, but I have one and no complaints. They now have the ZF 10 speed transmission.

Like mentioned, if your towing, then the diesel shines. Honestly, if your towing occasionally, the gas engines these days are up to the task.

I have an F250 w 6.7L diesel

Oil changes at shop $180
Fuel filter change at shop $100
Coolant flush $330

If you don’t need a diesel don’t get one. I drive and tow long distances. Every trip I make is about 300 - 800 miles one way.
Im loving my truck but not loving 14.5mpg and $128 fill ups.

I replaced my factory stabilizer with a bilstein about this time last year . No more shimmy in the front at all. I used a pitman arm puller to get the old one out.

The oil change is dependent on what oil you put in it. Mine takes 13 quarts of oil. I usually buy the 2.5 gallon jug of rotella 5w40 and another gallon . It’s about $100 for oil and filter DIY. I’ll get off cheaper this time since I can’t find any of the synthetic. The rotella 15w40 Dino is $15 a gallon. I only use motorcraft oil and fuel filters. I change the oil every 6-7k and the fuel filters every other oil change. The manual calls for every 22k on that but I’d rather be conservative with a very finicky fuel system.

FWIW, I did the same for 2 years with a 2.7L Ford F150. Your towing needs are peanuts.

You need to think about the business aspect of this and leverage the IRS standard mileage rate as much as possible.

I went with 6.6 gas. 2022 gmc 2500 denalli. Gets really good mileage for a truck that size. And more than enough power to pull. Great not paying extra in diesel right now lol
