This is the Mendenhall Glacier in my town. This time lapse shows how glaciers move forward yet retreat at the same time. Interesting to see how it's shrunk since 2007

The ice caves are the most fascinating part of the glacier IMO

That's cool Rog. How far has it retreated since '07? It's hard to judge scale from the video.

The reason I'm curious as to how far it's retreated is that the global warmalists always use glaciers as "proof" of climate change. How long is the total glacier?

Found this info on Wiki.
quote:

Mendenhall Glacier is a glacier about 12 miles (19 km) long
quote:

The glacier has also receded 1.75 miles (2.82 km) since 1958, when Mendenhall Lake was created, and over 2.5 miles (4.0 km) since 1500.
Damn 1500's industrial revolution started all of this.

We were up in Glacier NP and one of the lodges had historical pictures of the glaciers in the park vs. today and it was really shocking the differences.

Really neat. Regardless of manmade, natural or otherwise warming, I'm kinda sad I won't get to ever see it like it was just a few years ago.

It advanced during the little ice age, but has been retreating since the late 1700's

Probably half a mile or so since then. It's one of 37 in the ice field, and it's not the largest, by far. The Taku, South of town is advancing.

That's a great video showing how a glacier moves, makes it easy for the common folk like myself to understand how they can carve out the landscape.

Yeah, it's a weird concept when you can never see them moving. You can hear them creaking, some move as little as inches a day. Some have been known to move miles in a day.

That was awesome. Easy to forget that glaciers are still flowing water.

Yep, the pressure causes the ice to flow like really thick liquid. The Black Rapids Glacier moved 100 feet a day back in the 1930's, you could actually watch it move, they say.
