Tikka t3 questions

I am interested in getting a tikka t3 varmint stainless left handed 308 20" barrel. This gun would be a do it all kind of gun. I enjoy reloading and going to the range and tinkering so it will be used as a long range gun plus I'm always seeking the most accurate gun so I like upgrading the gun as well. That said I can appreciate a 1 MOA factory gun. this will also be my go to hunting rifle for pig whitetail etc. Am I making any mistakes in buying this gun or should I just wait and build a 700 actioned gun since I like tinkering and will probably upgrade things like the stock anyway?

Tikkas shoot well. I've shot a bunch of them and they've all made good on the sub-MOA guarantee.
That said, the stocks suck, and the plastic clip sucks. The stock is light and doesn't hurt accuracy, but it feels cheap. Lots of aftermarket options out there and maybe the varmint ones are better. As far as I know, there is no aftermarket clip available.
They are very nice rifles for the price point there are obvious places the cut costs on the rifle but accuracy isn't one.

I would still get the tikka even if you plan on tinkering.
The factory mag will allow you to load your bullets longer than a factor remmy/savage.
There are a lot of after market stock options that will allow for aics/magpul magazines. The KRG chassis are some of my favorite.

Lots of people bitch about the magezines , and I was not crazy about the way they feel, but has anyone had a problem with them ?

I haven't had a problem yet. I have a tikka and a Sako A7 that uses them.

I haven't had any problems yet, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the cheap feeling stock.

Nope. Not an AR guy, but isnt it the same format Magpul uses? or pretty close?

I searched around for a Tikka 20" lefty in 308. I ended up buying a 700 LTR.

Yeah that would be my next best option. I think the T3 is a better gun out the box but that 700 would have a lot more aftermarket options. Plus the T3 has a 1:11 versus 1:12 and is offered in stainless. Just have to be able to find one....

Don't know much about aftermarket stocks but why this one over a Boyd's?

Timmayy,
It sometimes annoys me when posters do what I'm about to do, but I'll do it anyway....
If indeed you like to tinker, have access to a vice and will probably upgrade the stock, I'd suggest considering buying a beat up Savage bolt action in 243, 260 Rem, 7-08 or 308 (you could prob also use a "long action" like a 270 or 30-06, but doing so might require a little extra work for you) and converting it to 308 Win. To do this, you'll need to:
1. Buy a Savage action wrench ($30)
2. Buy a pre-chambered barrel to fit the Savage action (there are a number barrel makers who do this, but I bought mine from McGowen Barrels and have been very pleased.
3. Rent a "go" and "no go" gauge from the internet. ($8/wk).
4. Watch some Youtube videos.
5. Buy a Remington 700 action wrench (mine cost $60 from Midway).
6. Buy the stock of your choice. (????$$$)
This will give you a custom barrel made to your specs plus the satisfaction of knowing you did the work yourself. That's the route I went a few years ago when I converted a Stevens Model 200 bolt action (bought new from Academy for $180!) from 270 Win to 221 Fireball. W/o bedding the action, the gun routinely shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

I bought a T3 Stainless Lite in LH 270 two years ago and put a Meopta 4x12x50 on it. My ONLY complaint with the gun is the action/ magazine. Due to the top rail extending over the chamber, it is almost impossible to load and shoot the gun without the magazine.
While it certainly can be done, I'm just not comfortable with a detachable magazine in the woods as my means of firing my weapon. You have to remove the magazine to put the removed round back into it, if this makes any sense. I prefer my 700 BDL with the hinged floor plate and my A-Bolt with detachable magazine over the T3, for this and this only.
The handling, shooting, weight, trigger, price, etc are all favorable factors that offset my issue with the chamber and magazine.

Sounds like a blast. I may start looking around for finding an old savage or rem 700 to play around with.

I'm planning on pulling the trigger on T3 compact 7mm08 for my sons first rifle (11 years old). They only thing that bothered me was the plastic drop magazine. Everything about this gun appears top notch with this exception.

That's the exact scope I'm looking at. I was told you will be hard pressed to find a better light gathering scope than meopta for the money. What did you pay and where did you purchase from? Lastly, did you use the rings that came in the T3 from factory.

I bought it at Interstate Guns in Hammond a couple of years ago. I think I paid close to $600 for it and added a nice set of rings that Chris recommended. I still have the factory rings somewhere in my safe. It is a fine scope.
