A 70-year-old Vietnam veteran was dropping off a friend Thursday morning in Venice, Illinois, when, authorities said, two men pulled up next him in a vehicle and asked for directions.
But they really wanted something else: They pulled a gun on the vet in a robbery attempt, investigators said.
Unfortunately for the crooks, the veteran — who’s from nearby St. Louis — was carrying a concealed firearm authorized by the state of Missouri, KTVI-TV said.
And he used it, fatally shooting 19-year-old Billy Dickerson in the head and wounding 23-year-old Perry Richardson with bullets to the arm and chest, KTVI added.
“He feared for his own life,” Madison County (Illinois) State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons told KDSK-TV. “He feared for the life of his friend and just took decisive action in that moment.”
Also Richardson has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Dickerson’s death, KTVI said, adding that once he’s released from the hospital, he’ll be taken to jail and held without bond.
“If you’re engaged in a forceable felony and someone — no matter who — dies during the course of your crime, you are accountable for murder,” Gibbons told KDSK.

Good for him.
Say what now? What kind of sense does that make?

Perpetrators should have been named Charlie

that is a great law.
If the deceased was forced to rob the old man by the other perp, sure. But he chose on his own to put himself in that situation. I can't see how logically the 'murder' would get pushed on to the living partner.

Because they were in the commission of a crime that caused a death.

Joe and Sally both decide that kicking in a door and robbing the elderly is a good idea. Joe and Sally both proceed to kick in a door to rob someone. Grandpa Jones shoots Joe in the noggin. Sally goes to the electric chair.
Maybe down the road Joe Jr and Sally Jr decide that kicking in doors to rob the elderly isn't a great idea.

i guess. Just seems to me that Joe took the risk, the same risk Sally took. Sally didnt get Joe killed, Joe did.
IMHO (which doesnt actually matter )

Had the guy not fired from inside his vehicle then he would be the one facing a murder rap.
It is just recently that Illinois started honoring Missouri concealed carry licenses by letting us carry our weapons inside our vehicles. But don't dare take a weapon outside a vehicle without an Illinois permit.

Maybe a weapons charge, but not murder. Self defense was corroborated by multiple witnesses.
