A little background: I've had my Rem 700 BDL in 30 06 since 1997. It's been an awesome rifle, but it's time to upgrade glass. I want to make sure I do this right without wasting money and buying too much for what i'm needing. I've currently got the Leupold vari x 2 3x9 - 42

Looking at picking up this Swaro z6 from Sport Optics. It's the Z6 2-12x50 - Plex

Z6

What do yall think??

ETA: Hunt in South LA and Mississippi; lot of shots taken in the last 15 mins of shooting hrs. so i'm looking for as bright a scope as i can get

i use my rifles for the same thing and i was nikon for the longest time but now i use vortex they make some great scopes for the price, and im not one to drop that much money on a scope due to the conditions i hunt in i would get pretty ticked if it got messed up.
just my opinion though, but im sure that scope would do just fine for what you need it for.

It's a big price but no conditions in the south are going to damage a Swavorski unless you tie it to your truck and drag it behind you

I have a z6 in that size. I like it, a lot. I didn't see any use in going bigger.

10x is plenty for me, but I'm not sure how much light there is to be gained going from 42mm to 50mm objective

most likely no, but id say that there are some scopes being made today that have outstanding brightness for less money and i dont shoot far enough for clearness to be an issue.

Look up exit pupil.

Basically, you're only giving up something on the highest magnifications. Your eye can only bring in so much light, beyond that, you gain nothing.

Sounds great Chris. I should be able to get by there in September.

I'm trying to buy this once with no regrets. Anything comparable I should be looking at? Zeiss, high end Vortex, Leopold?

Simmons sporting goods in Bastrop has the Zeiss 3-12x56 Conquest for $799 and I think you can order online, I've got several of these and they are great in low light

Before you change scopes, make sure you have quality binoculars. The scope you have will do fine during LEGAL shooting hours. If you want to cheat an extra 15 minutes, the euro glass makes a difference. It is legal to hunt at night in Europe and they have the glass to prove it.

I have that exact scope on my 308. I can see at midnight with 1/2 moon out. Glass is very crisp. Will be more than enough scope for what you describe. Swaros are rugged and there glass is premier. I cannot find faults with mine

And since you don't need to hunt deer at midnight, it's a bit much too much scope. Get the Swaro binos first, then one day get the scope if needed. You'll spend much more time looking through the binos than the rifle scope.
We are fortunate that a $500 scope is really good. Is the $2000 scope better? Yes, but unless you are an outlaw and hunt past legal light, it doesn't matter.

I bought a Z5 about 10 years ago, one of my best hunting purchases along with quality binoculars.

Just remember during low light situations turn the power all the way down.
