Thinking about buying one as cheap gun to have fun with.

I've heard mixed things about them reliable but not that accurate etc., but that for the price they are great.

Recommendations on caliber?

9mm, .40, .45, .380?

TIA

Generally anything Hi Pernt is garbage, but I'll say this. If you have the extra coin and want to have fun, I've heard the carbine was fun and is pretty functional. I wouldn't trust it for self defense or anything but for playing around, go ahead.

The "Hi Point is garbage" narrative is overplayed. They are fine for what they are, a cheap entry level firearm. Especially the carbines, they are decent shooters at an affordable price point.

Hi Point also has one of the best customer service departments around.

Would I carry one on my hip? No.
But they aren't as bad as a lot of people think

Damn they went up in the 15 or so years i have had mine. Think i paid under 200 for the 9mm i have. I did change the stock to aftermarket and now it looks more like the CX4 storm. Mine has always shot well and is a great camp gun for shooting critters.

Can you get the $100 bill paint job on the carbine too?

Yep. My father in law has one that he loves to shoot. I think it is a 9mm. Says he's put thousands of rounds through it and never an issue. He also has one of the KelTec sub 2000 carbines and says it is a blast.

I would absolutely never even consider getting a carbine chambered in 380.

I doubt Hi Point has it, but if you can find it chambered in 10mm, it would be a fantastic carbine.

I had a .40 carbine that I traded for a sub compact 9mm pistol. I loved it, but it was impossible to break down and clean. Perfect reliability though. I kinda miss it

I believe I would check out the keltec sub 2000 first. I bought one in .40 s&w this morning for about 400 bucks.

I probably had 5k rounds through mine before I replaced the firing pin and spring. Never had a FTF or FTE until my first and only light primer strike which lead to the spring/pin change. It might have been cleaned once or maybe twice? I have zero idea why anyone wouldn't trust something with that track record with self defense.

Now the small 10rd capacity is the reason it wouldn't be on my list for self defense but trust in the function of the rifle isn't.

Not sure what type of accuracy you are wanting but I can wear out the 8" gong at 50 yards with it. Mine is coming close to 20 years old.
