I'm thinking about buying a 40 caliber FNH for home protection. I've read good reviews, but I'd like to hear what you guys think. Good gun or should I keep shopping around? TIA

Welcome to the OB. You've come to the right place.

Is there a particular reason you are choosing 40? 9mm, 40, and 45 all pretty much do the same thing so I usually suggest 9mm first since it's cheapest to shoot and holds the most ammo. But if you already own a 40 I can understand keeping ammo consistent.

FN makes some amazing handguns. I've had my eyes on the FNS9 for a while but just don't have the money or reason to purchase right now. It's gotten stellar reviews and people love the trigger. I can personally say I have not felt a lockup on a barrel of a polymer gun that slams shut quite like an FN. It's like closing the door to a vault.

I've chosen the 40 because it packs more punch than the 9mm. I don't currently own a handgun. I've asked around as to whether I should get the 9mm or 40. Everyone suggests getting the 40 because there's no doubt it'll stop someone in their tracks.

Best advice so far.

Get a 9mm. Waste your money on a .40 if all your friends are cops, all your friends are ghetto thugs, or if you need something to match the manliness of your chromed truck nuts.

There's a damn good reason the FBI is transitioning to 9mm.

Like others mentioned, no one that you might possibly shoot will ever notice the difference between a .40 and 9mm. Yes, the .40 does pack more punch, but it is negligible. 9mm is cheaper to shoot, easier on your gun and with the right bullets will do just as good of a job as a 40.

As Shexter and Buck both said, this is true, but to such a small degree that there is barely a difference.

Think of it this way: 9mm is light and fast, 45 is heavy and slow, and 40 splits the difference. But 9mm has two other big advantages:

1. Larger magazine (17 vs 15 for most full sized guns)

2. Quicker follow-up shots (you have a greater chance of connecting with your target more than once)

And if you plan on carrying something smaller than a full sized gun, it makes even more sense to go with 9mm. I carry an M&P9c or a Kahr CM9 depending on my attire. The 9c holds 12 and the CM9 holds 6. You'll see a 1 or 2 round reduction of those in 40. Does 1 or 2 shots matter that much? If that's all I have on me you bet your arse it does. You might as well stack the cards in your favor.

I couldn't be happier with my .40 caliber (Glock 27) that I purchased in the late 90s, BUT if I could have a do-over I would own a 9mm handgun (loaded with modern hollow-points) instead because of magazine capacity (primary reason) and slightly less expensive ammo (secondary).

Ammunition design has come a LONG way in recent years. Please check out the Pistol Ammunition section at the Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo page hosted by ar15.com. A very telling quote from there is: "Properly designed hollow-point ammunition - regardless of caliber - all perform very close to each other when you take expanded diameter and penetration depth into account"

Solid advice. You guys have convinced me. I'll go with the 9mm. Saves me a little money. That's a bonus.

You'll be pleased with this decision later too. You're a smart man.

Which FN handgun are you most interested in getting as of now?

Not sure as of yet. I know I'll get a 9mm stainless. That's about as far as I've gotten. What do you suggest? I'm not very well versed in handguns.

My FNX 45 shoots softer than just about any 9mm I've ever handled. If I can't get what I need done with 15 rounds of 45...I probably won't be alive to need the two I'm giving up.

OP if you're looking at a 9mm, the H&K VP9 is phenomenal and about the same price as an FN will run.

I don't have one of their handguns yet but the FNH SLP shotgun is on of the best weapons I have ever used.

The FNS9 I suggested up there is going to be one of the most simple and effective handguns in their lineup. Since it's striker-fired, you get the same trigger pull for every shot. Not that a hammer-fired gun isn't easy to shoot, you do have to train with two different trigger pulls, the first being double action and the following shots single action.

But if you want to stick in the FN product line, I doubt you can go wrong with any.

It would be very helpful to hold a few at a gun store and see which one feels best for you. FN is known to have some pretty aggressive grip texturing so know that going in.

I've held a few before. I like the sights and the grip isn't bad. I held a Springfield and it felt like the grip was going to cut my hand open. Didn't really care for that.

I'm sure you'll more than pleased with your purchase then, no matter which FN you get.

Be sure to post pictures and such here after purchase though!

I've shot the fns 40 a few hundred rounds I'd say. Great gun. Trigger is horrid. Fnx in 9 or 45 makes a lot of sense to me. All my carry stuff is 9mm but I'm partial to .45 especially if you can get a ton of rounds out of it like the fnx mags offer.

I'll throw my vote in for the FNX9. Great capacity, great trigger, and I am a huge fan of their FNX line. I prefer hammer fired over striker, so take it fwiw. My FNX45 has become one of my favorite pistols. The lockup, trigger, feel, sights, and 15+1 in 45 acp is amazing. I've been on the lookout for a good deal for 2 fnx9's.

Btw, meprolight has a line of night sights that are great for the FNX in case you don't go with the tactical version. Either way, over the past couple of years, FN has taken over as my favorite pistol manufacturer.

I own three FN pistols which are all great guns. My FNX 45 is an awesome large 45 handgun. It's super accurate and reliable. I also have a FNS 9 and FNS 9 Compact. My wife uses the FNS 9 compact for conceal carry and she loves it. She also shoots it way better than all my other pistols. My FNS 9 is also a great gun which I carry occasionally in the winter months with heavier clothing.

FN now makes most of our weapons in the Army and they've been around forever with a great reputation. Overall it's a solid purchase.

I switched from the .40 to the 9mm 4 years ago and I should have done it sooner.
