What is the OB opinion on this; good or bad?

Now our 1100 acres is roughly:
200 acres just clearcut
100 acres of 1 year old pines
200 acres of 4 year old pines
200 acres of 8 year old pines
300 acres of 12 year old pines
100 acres in strips of SMZ

More deer will probably be seen and killed; but I will miss the scenery.

Deer are an edge species. Sounds like yall have a lot of edges and will benefit by having more deer.

But I know what you mean, I hate to see old forest get cut down too.

Hopefully you have lots of plots and corn feeders. Deer don't like pine combs.

It is nice even though it's split between 11 hunters. Definitely don't have time to hunt every spot I think might be good.

I'm trying to decide if this is a good time to get out or double down and carve out some great stand sites.

Yep and we do have a lot of edge. Two of my 3 stands are in the woods that were cut. Killed all 4 deer of my deer in that patch of woods and all were near the edge of a young plantation.

That's no joke! I did hear that they plan to thin the 12 year olds in 2017, so that will help.

Nope. We feed and plant the roads. They charge extra for any plot wider than 2 pine rows; so we have some skinny plots and a lot of feeders.

And there is plenty of browse in a young plantation; its that pre-thinning stage that is all pine needles.

I would hunt the 4 year old pines. It will be thicker than shite in there and full of deer.

2 years after that thinning, you won't be able to walk through that shite it will be so thick with briars.....awesome bedding areas to hold deer on your property

Any food plots in that 8 and 12?

Over the years it's going to get harder & harder to hunt. Do you do the burning or the owner? I would emphasize to the owner the importance for various reasons. It helps you and it protects his trees.

Plum creek, or whoever bought them, is the owner.
The burns are rare, but we've seen them nuke and fertilize.
One of my stands is on the corner of 12, 4 and new cutover. With plot strip in the 4.
Another is on the edge of 12 and new cutover.

I think I just need to put plots and maintain them in the new cut.

The guy that leases my 40 in southeast ms wants out because of the hounders, so I'll keep that for me and a buddy in case I don't like the changes in Arkansas.

I assume you are in south Arkansas? Keep an eye on upcoming changes to regulations. Chronic wasting disease was found up north around Ponca and Boxley Valley. The prevalence is high enough that they have decided to start testing road kills state wide. If (unlikely in my opinion) they find it in south Arkansas baiting will be banned and antler restrictions will probably be lifted.

Yes, it's in Drew County just south of Monticello. I understand why they would ban bait; to limit the spread.

Why would they get rid of antler regs in the event of disease?

Because they will be looking to thin the numbers as much as possible to reduce the ability to spread. In other areas where it was found they had total open season and have annihilated the deer.

Prevalence rates are highest in mature bucks due to their extended range and higher level of deer to deer contact during the rut. Their goal will be to keep the herd young.

I think CWD is overblown. With the prevalence rate that they are finding in the core area it's estimated its been there for 10-15 years. During that time the herd in that area has been steadily increasing.
