They should just go to the Glock and be done with it.

People say it's because the military is against using a poly-framed pistol. But don't some units use HK pistols as their sidearms? I know the poly construction is a bit different but it's still plastic regardless.

It's because it doesn't have a safety

You'd think glock would come out with a model with an external safety just to get the contract with the government.

I read on another board enlisted servicemen and women(PC) were having trouble making qualifier with the 1911.

I was a member of the pistol team that traveled Louisiana shooting in military competitions. The problem with the 1911 at that time was the pistols were so fricking old that the sights were shite. They were not even remotely accurate. When they went to the Beretta accuracy went up 200%. I never used it in combat so I wouldn't know but if they were to go back to the 1911 and used a system with adjustable sights, I think you would be on to something. The 1911 was my primary weapon for 8 years and if done right, it's a beautiful weapon.

I bet they go back to the 1911.

They can have all the "Industry Days" they want and listen to all kinds of pitches, but I bet their minds are already made up.

The 1911 has served them well for years. The only issues are the sights and the ammo which is a tradeoff. You get more stopping power but you end up with only 7 bullets.

I would be an advocate to using the double stack 1911's. Something like the Legion LF-P.

FNX-45.

I have one. Generally like it, but it won't feed some 45 ammo (Winchester white box doesn't fit mag. properly).

I've never had problems w/ mine.

Loading the mag is tough on those last two rounds.

If you haven't tried to run the Winchester through it, you probably wouldn't ever know there was a problem.

Bought several boxes of the white box stuff right after I bought this pistol and was super pissed thinking it was a problem with the firearm or mag. Did some reading up and it turns out Winchester is not made quite to spec. and prone to stick in the mag and jam the follower.

and no shite about loading the last few in the mag.

How about the CZ platform? Get a CZ-85 or SP-01, and you have about the ideal military weapon.

DA/SA, all-steel frame (Sig and Beretta are aluminum, the others polymer); will take the beating from .40 or .45 a lot better over time. External safety and slide release are similar to 1911, and you can carry cocked and locked as needed (or, if they desire, swap to a decocker). Double stack gives you better capacity than a 1911 (duh). And IMHO, they point as well as any gun out there.

The CZ 75 was one of the guns that inspired the last trials, but it was from behind the Iron Curtain then. Not so now; and it'd be a good price I bet. The CZ's are already undercutting the Berettas and SIGs in price now, and you better believe our new NATO partners would jump at giving us a sweetheart deal.

Are we still expecting to mate the pistol ammo to a submachine gun? I know there are 9mms (HK) and 45's; what about the others?
