Looks like I'll be in central Ohio for the rest of the year for work. I'd like to take the opportunity to do some Deer hunting. Interested to know more about the states deer population and access to public land.

Any areas I should focus on and things I should avoid? Tia

I've got a supplier who lives up there. I think it's shotgun only.

And it's not too crowded as long as you like hunting the same 40 acre block as 12 other people.

Yikes! I was looking on their website and it seems like there are slot of small public hunting grounds. I'll be bow hunting only.

I will tell you about my experience

I went up there a couple years ago for gun (shotgun) season which is only a few days. The rest is bow only.

Anyway, we get up there the day before season opens scout out the place a little and get ready to hunt the next day. Well let me tell you, from then on.. it was like nothing i have ever seen around here. Every piece of land we passed every single day, you drive by and look through the woods and all you see is hunters orange walking. There would be 10, 20, or more people walking with shotguns doing drives. And more people on the other side lining the road with shotguns. This wasnt at just one piece of property, it was every stretch of land we passed. I have never seen anything like it. From what we could gather is because they only have a 3-4 day gun season or whatever it is, everyone takes off those days, gets out and and stomps the woods pushing deer to kill all they can.

I've never hunted up there but I know they kill some giants. Sounds like the gun season is a cluster but I think the rut is during archery season.

So it sounds like it's a bit more tame during bow season and they have big deer. Anyone know about when the rut is? Or where I can find that kind of info out.

I was looking on google maps and it looks like the west part of the state is more Ag fields while the south and east are more forested areas.

Were you hunting public or private? Bow or gun? What part of your state were you hunting?

Well, I'll tell you this, the outer ring suburbs of Cleveland are overwhelmed with deer. Those frickers are like pest in my neighborhood. Eating everyone's flowers, walking down the sidewalks, fricking in bunches. Hell, just an hour ago I'm sitting on my patio watching the Tigers and just across my fence, between mine and neighbors house this doe is laying down with a fawn that must Have born this morning. Couldn't have been more than 10" tall.

Reading this depressed me. I would give up deer hunting if things are half as bad as others are saying up there.

I totally agree. I can't imagine having to hunt with that many people so close. I'm going to give it a shot though.
