Looking for a bow that I can make quick, half-draw shots. When searching craigslist/ebay, how do i know what I'm looking for? I've heard Mathews makes one, but not sure which model. I've searched for bows without break but it only returns results for broken bows and failures, etc. I have never been a bow hunter so don't even know if in using the right terminology. Is this also a bow without let off?

If that's the style of shooting you will do, you should get a longbow or recurve.

It would be a bow with zero let off, also known as a recurve or longbow.

I don't think you'll find that in a new model compound setup. They all have eccentric cams and plenty let off as far as I know.

If that's what you really want, you should probably get a recurve.

Matthew Genesis is one, but most people who want the ability to shoot at half draw usually buy recurves.

Recurves all seem a bit too long for bowfishing from a kayak.

A recurve is the way to go.

Ohhhhhhhhhh

You should have said that from jump street. Bow fishing bows have low draw weights and little let off. You can shoot them from full draw pretty quickly

If you're insistent on shooting from 3/4 draw, a recurve is pretty much your only option as far as I know. They can be had in pretty compact models. My brother has one that isn't long at all.

The thing about bowfishing bows is there all so damn expensive. I don't want to drop $400 on a bow...yet. I want to start slowly to see if this idea even works. Can you recommend something to search for in the compound now category? Like a used hunting bow with low let off?
I'd like to get a used one for about $50 if possible.

I'd prefer a recurve for bow fishing, but everyone is different. I think you could shoot a recurve from a yak, but if you must, there are compound bows made specifically for bow fishing.
Can't think of any names right now, but if you do some research you should find them.

Yea they are.

$50 will be tough. I have some old bows I can give you but they're deer hunting bows with 80lb draw and shitty low let off. They'd kill you trying to bowfish with them.

Shop used is all I can tell you. Maybe academy offers some cheap setups? Or maybe find a long draw kids bow you could rig up? Bargain cave at cabelas usually has some really good shite.

Shop around. Recurves are anti cheap

Even the shorter recurves would be tough to shoot downward sitting in a yak. I know I should duck for suggesting this, but a crossbow may work better for that application.

Or get a larger yak that you can stand in easily.

ETA: a canoe would work even better for standing and shooting a recurve/longbow, maybe the Indians were onto something.

I assumed he'd be standing up, cause I'm not sure if Byron Ferguson himself could shoot a fish while sitting in a kayak.

Unless maybe it was one of those jumping bastards.

Also, to OP, make sure you get a bow that is somewhat weak.
You don't want arrows sinking too deep into mud, stumps, or going completely through your fish.

If I remember correctly crossbows are illegal for bow fishing.

Yea here it is straight from the pamphlet.

Illegal Methods for Fishing or taking All Fish
It is unlawful to possess any of the prohibited instruments, weapons, substances or
devices described below with the intent to take fish.
• Crossbows
• Poisons
