Anybody here been? Want to take the family after duck season and thinking about booking now. Need some tips, I have never been to NM to ski but heard awesome things. Figured I would start here and move to the OT if necessary.

Actually one of my favorite spots. Years ago, you used to have to ski a black to get to the base so that sucked. Now, they have made it accessible to all levels.
Pros: Small mountain. From most any point you can choose black, blue, green route. What I really like was that there are many cases where the 3 choices split off and rejoin every few hundred yds. It allowed a group to split- meet up- split all the way down so all levels of skiier could stay together.
Con: Small mountain ( I love that, some hate it)
Nothing to do at the base other than couple restaurants/bars.
Can at times have issues with snow, from what I hear.
We stayed in a big hotel at the base, I think Edelweiss. It was good. Really nothing at the base is bad location. You can also stay up the road and save some $ but you have to drive several miles to do that.

Haven't been, but my wife's aunt and uncle own a vacation rental house there. They love it and swear by the skiing. I've seen lots of pictures, and it is on my bucket list to go.

Taos is awesome, but it can be pretty steep if you are a novice skier.

Do they allow boarders now? That was one reason I liked it so much

Me and my wife are decent but haven't been in a few years. I want to get my kids started so obviously they have never been.
Heard Angel Fire may be more kid friendly?

Never been to Angel Fire.
We went to Red River, NM every year during college because it was so cheap. It can be really hit or miss with snow, like absolutely terrible and skiing in 55 degree weather or really good snow. Just depends on the season. But it was a good place to learn how to ski.

I think the kids will be fine at Taos. It has made real strides in being a better all-around mountain.
The scale of the place makes it great too, Kids can do a ski school day and you can easily ski a little and meet them at lunch for instance.
My kids love it, though they were not rank beginners when we last went.

Grew up skiing RR/Taos/Angel Fire and always enjoyed Taos the most. Go fly fish while you're there

We have a house in Angel Fire, so I spend a lot of time there. It's a lot more kid friendly than Taos IMO, very easy skiing but smaller. Taos is an awesome mountain if you are a good skiier. You can find as gnarly a run as you want there. The only downside to skiing NM is the variable snow fall. 2 years ago is was an amazing ski season for us, last year was not. Also, getting there is kind of a pain in the arse, but worth it.

Great place... A little cheaper than big CO resorts and the steepest slopes I have been on.

Unfortunately, they do

What I remember from skiing angel fire was lots of black diamond slopes. I'm sure that's changed. It also snowed its arse some days we were there. I'd definitely go back!

Looks like Angel Fire is leading my list.
Is it good? Will have duck killing on the brain, not sure if I can make the switch to fly fishing mode though.
Thanks for everyone's responses....

Skiing weather =/= fly fishing weather

Watch the snow reports. N.M skiing can be iffy.

Taos was the first place I ever went skiing. Went back in 2004. Had a great time. As others have mentioned it's a somewhat small mountain however the slopes can be pretty steep(good thing)

Look into the Kandahar condo's at Taos. Very nice, skin in/out, with easy access to the kids area.

The only thing about staying at a ski in/ski out in Taos is you are 20-30 mins from the actual town of Taos. Not much to do in the ski valley after the slopes close.
