Father-in-law and I are still searching for a decent used aluminum semi-v and we have 2 of these G3's we're going to be looking at tomorrow, weather permitting.

One is a 2004 center console with a 90 2 stroke Yammy and one is a 2008 side console with a 90 4 stroke Yammy. Both have almost identical options (Bimini & trolling motor). Older one has a Lowrance HDS-5 while the newer one only has an old hummingbird grayscale fishfinder.

Newer one is commanding about $4k more and we're willing to pay that if it all checks out but our preference is a center console.

Anyone have some experience/opinions/advice for these two boats?

Thanks!

2008

Not a clue. But the 08 looks much better at face value. I assume a big price difference?

No first hand knowledge, but G3 has a solid reputation. I'd personally prefer the newer motor, but those Yamaha 90 2 strokes were about as bullet proof as they come. I would think either would be fine if they were properly maintained (that goes for the boats and motors).

I've seen the 04 myself. Father-in-law hasn't seen it yet. It looks marginally maintained. Seats are worn. 1 of them coming completely apart. Inner decks look clean. Console is clean but faded. The engine looked very clean and ran on a hose nicely. Didn't have time to do a compression check but I will. One minor issue I saw with the motor is it looked like oil was leaking from the where the oil level sensor is in the oil tank.

I have no personal experience with 4 strokes but have heard many positives about them as far as better economy and lower noise levels. Also, it's a Yamaha so I know that as long as they've been maintained they'll last forever.

Another factor is the older boat is owned by a young guy who doesn't seem to have his shite together.

Newer boat is owned by an 80yr old guy who's just not able to go out in his own boat alone anymore and he's getting rid of the 4 he has.

The 08 is listed at $12k obo and he said he has a little wiggle room. The 04 is listed at $9k and I have had him talked down to $8k since I went to see it 1.5 weeks ago. Even at $8k he's still $1k over what NADA says is average retail but he does have the new gps/fish finder unit also.

A no brainier for me.

At those prices get the newer boat with the 4 stroke. Those biats should not be so closely priced.

You will be much happier and the boat will be easier to resale if you decide to move up in a few years.

That's how I feel, but this is a "two party" purchase... My FIL can be a little stingy when it comes to letting go of his cash.

Some of the g3's around this time has issues with the treated wood reacting with the aluminum. The bunk wood on the trailers and the transom. It would eat through the boat. Look for pitting on the boat.

It's a no brainer for me, but in the other direction. 2-stroke is highly preferred on an aluminum 1860, weight matters so much more on these boats and the 4-stroke is 100lbs heavier with less torque. The only reason yamaha isn't still putting 2-strokes on those G3s is because they aren't making 2-strokes in the US currently. They're trying to get the weight down on those newer mid range 4-strokes but this motor would be right when they started doing a ton of tinkering to achieve it and that always worries me with motors and engines. A few model year's difference is nothing for an aluminum hull unless it's obviously corroded (could be the case with either if left in salt without anodes) and that 2-stroke yammy is a proven workhorse. I would take the older model and run.

ETA: I hadn't read your concerns about the older boat before I posted but I haven't changed my opinion much. Whether the seller knows it or not that motor class is highly desirable right now for all the reasons I mentioned above. You simply can't buy them anymore. If you're worried he mistreated it then I would have a mechanic look it over, but that boat isn't gonna last long if the motor has good compression. 1860 aluminum hulls are a dime a dozen and cosmetics aren't what most people are looking for in these boats.

We went to see both of these boats today. In the end, FIL and I felt more comfortable with the newer boat with the 4 stroke. It is definitely the better maintained of the two. I know full well the strength and reputation that the 2 stroke Yammy 90's have, being that I had one on a 17ft Triumph/Logic until I sold it 3 years ago. Unfortunately, this one just showed too many signs of lack of upkeep and some neglect.

The 4 stroke had plenty of power with me, FIL and the owner in it. The trolling motor on the newer boat is only 3 years old, compared to a much older one with an intermittent electrical issue on the older boat. Plenty of room even though it is a side console and it is over all in much better condition.

I believe we chose wisely...
