i have definitely over asked the topic on the OT, and didnt get very many good responses figured here would be my last ditch effort
so im buying my first pair of costas tomorrow, the zane. i am buying them because i race in regattas almost every other weekend, and the only pair i have is a pair of wayferers that just arent cutting it.

so my question is are the 580 lenses really worth the extra money? these sunglasses will be on the water constantly, but will never be used for fishing, ever but i am always on the water, should i get the 580's or will the 400's be good enough?

Are those back in style, or did you keep them all these years?

Yeah I only use 580s. Some people say they can't tell the difference but I can. Glass is just clearer and feels better and higher quality

I have had the same pair of Costas for 3 years and definitely gotten my $200 out of them. I say go ahead and spend the extra money and get the 580s. I am up for another pair, just because, and have been looking at them as well.

I definitely prefer the 580G over the 480G/P. Only problem I have with my Costa's is they feel heavy on my face after an all day fishing trip.

My buddy and I both have similar frames and the same color lense. I got the 400s and he the 580s. There's a difference. I love mine but his are just clearer. My 400s are 100x better than my wayfarers. I would only get the 580s if I had the cash.

If you won't be fishing, and thus won't be trying to see down into the water far, I wouldn't worry about the 580s. I've had both, the 580s help for seeing into the water deeper but the 400s were still great sunglasses, better than any of my $25 fishing glasses I've used before. The 400s will be a tad lighter anyway, even though it'll be unnoticeable

Its not just to see in the water. The reason you can see in the water is because the glare blocking of the 580s is better. Get the 580s. Blocking the glare isn't all about seeing under the water. Your vision will be improved via less glare off the water. I'd imagine that's pretty important in this instance.

400 glass is heavier than 580P. The glass is the heavy thing, not the 580.

Well yea, glass is heavier than plastic. I was assuming we were talking glass, it's a complete waste of money to get plastic lenses on costas.

And I know how it's supposed to work and the advantages of the thicker glass and whatnot, I was just speaking from experience. The 580s had were less yellow and you could see deeper into the water, I didn't notice anything else different.

I have a pair of Maui Jim's with the titanium spring frames (no hinges). They are the lightest and most comfortable sunglasses I have ever worn. I would say they easily rival Costa's in terms of optical clarity. You just can't see down into the water the way you can with the Costa 580G.

My gf's Maui Jim's I bought are pretty close to my 580s on the water. If I were to buy another pair of glasses to wear out not fishing I would get Maui's.

I wear my 580s when I'm driving in the rain, and it's amazing the clarity you get. But of course the purpose is to see deeper into the water. It's just that the reason you can is because the glare is blocked better, and there are other applications where that is important. I don't know exactly what a regatta is, but I assume its a sailboat race. I think being on the water like that all day long, the better glare protection combined with improved vision due to better glare reduction is important.

Also, I dunno any homeless folk that participate in regattas, so I'm assuming he can afford the extra money the 580s cost. In that case, get the 580s.

Never used for fishing... Definitly get the 400's unless you wanna piss away extra coins.

400's should be good. 580's block a little more glare (yellow light) as stated before, but its hardly noticeable unless you are fishing. go to cabelas(assuming you live around BR) and compare the two in their coy pond. I did and could barely tell the difference. I would stress lens color over the 400 or 580. Go to costa's website and see what color lense fits your needs best. i would think you would want a blue lens.
