I have been trying to search JP's Code of Ordinance's about rules storing a boat in my driveway. Anyone have current info on this. All I can find googling is a 5 year old Nola.com article.

Thanks

It all depends on your neighbors, if they call JP. they will come out and slap a pink sign on it and you have like 10 days to move it. You can store it behind your property line in your drive way.

I've read someone say it must not extend past the front of your house ... so what he said his uncle does is turn it sideways. It looks goofy but technically not protruding past the front of his house

This guy a street over from my parents keeps his boat on the street all summer long. It's fricking annoying because it is a really wide boat, and takes up an entire lane. He even puts cones out in front and behind it.

This is by the beach club on the lake. He's been doing it for years

Its a catch all ordinance in my opinion.

The have it to appease the neighbors more than anything else.

You cannot have a trailer or boat within the front setbacks. (20 feet) If you live on a corner you can't have it in the side set back either.

Park the boat beyond the setback and there is not much they can do about it.

What really yanks my chain is they won't tell you who called in. I get why but its still weak

Contact Code Enforcement. Another option is to call Citizen Services (name may have changed), if they can't answer your question, they should be able to tell you who to contact. After that, call your councilman.

I pass all the time by a guy who lives near bonnabel and vets who keeps his Nautic star parked on his front lawn. I'm thoroughly astounded none of his neighbors has dropped a dime on him.

Thinking boats become trailers/RV's. My thoughts on their reasoning.

I looked into this a couple years back. Code enforcement is of the opinion that the boat must be behind the front building line on the property. Thus, it has to be in the backyard or on the side, but can't be in front of or stick out past the front line of your house.

However, I read the Municipal Code, and that rule applied to recreational vehicles. Common sense dictates a boat is a recreational vehicle. But, the code actually defines recreational vehicle, and that definition does not include a boat on a trailer.

When I pointed that out to the code enforcement fellow who answered my question via email, he put me on ignore.

Code may have changed since then.

and they changed it - now includes recreational watercraft-

quote:

Recreational vehicles and recreational watercraft may be parked or stored on the sites of single-, two-, three-, or four-family dwellings including manufactured homes and townhouses, subject to the following conditions:
(1)
At no time shall parked or stored recreational vehicles and recreational watercraft be occupied or used for living, sleeping, or housekeeping purposes.
(2)
Setback requirements:
a.
Recreational vehicles and recreational watercraft not parked or stored inside of a fully enclosed garage shall be parked or stored completely behind the front building line of the principal structure or not less than sixty (60) feet from the front lot line, whichever is closest to the front lot line.

ETA - municipal code link

ETA again to add there are other requirements for distance to side property line, no parking opn the side on corner lots, etc
