With my work and family stuff, I started looking into finding a Started hound about a month or so ago that I could finish on my own. I basically retired my BLM a few years back and it has been fun watching my buddies work their dogs, but I feel like I am ready to get back in the game with my own dog again. However, I was not sure I wanted to go the whole puppy route until I saw some of the prices that Started dogs are going for (and that's if you can find one). Holy shite. When did Labs turn into such high price investments? I swear you can buy race horses for what some of these dogs are going for. Guess I will do the puppy thing after all and train it myslef.

It is crazy but when you look at it from a financial standpoint, dog training isn't cheep. We have a guy in our club that found and bought a started dog. He had 8-10K in the dog, picked it up, took it home, two days later it got hit by a car. Did not kill it but had to sink another 5-8K into it in vet bills. This dog healed up and is a beast. One of the best pups I have seen in a very long time.

That's even more obscene than what I was seeing. I saw several that were in the $3K range and a few about $5K. There is no way in hades I could spend that on a Started dog. You sure it wasn't already Finished?

Shite, I think I am going to find a decent liter and get 2 dogs and train them both up and sell one.

Sorry, he bought a started dog, let the trainer keep it and finish her off. That is what he had it in before it got wacked by the car.

Wildrose quoted me 18 to 20 thousand on a finished dog that had 3 seasons under its belt.

Just think about all the kennel has invested in a started dog.

A years worth of training, food, vet bills, etc.

Might come out a little cheaper in the long run.

I don't even like to think what I have into my 3.5 yr old male. I bought him as a started dog and he stays at the trainer with the exception of teal and big duck season. Great dog, works 10x better for the trainer than me, i just don't have the time to work him, he picks up all my birds so that's a plus like I tell my kids when they play with him outside the fence, if he gets hit by a car he is probaly worth more than the car that hits him is.

Have you looked at the price of a GOOD puppy lately? Used to be $500-$1000. Entry level puppies are $1000, I saw a FCxFC repeat breeding for 6K/puppy. Like everything else hunting and fishing related things are expensive! There just seems to be no easy cheap way to get a high pedigree puppy.

My pup is 9 months old, I have $3,600 in him right now. This is just the price of the pup and started training.

I figured that good puppies with solid bloodlines/health checks were probably going for $1K now. I am seriously thinking of buying 2 dogs and training them both up and selling 1. I used to be a not to bad trainer back in the day and since I am about to lose my oldest kid to college, that is alot more time I will have on my hands.

If you have the time it would be worth it. My dog is almost 8 mos and after I visit trainer on Saturday and drop off his 3rd month training dues I'll be in for $3,700 with dog cost and 3 mos training. Will be sending him back before next season to learn hand signals. So another 2-3 months and I'll be in for $5-6k before he's 2 not including vet, food, accessories, etc.
