A buddy of mine has property outside of Erath and we decided to go hiking the other day. We found a good elevated spot to set up a camp. This past weekend we went out there and started building a Lean-To shelter. We spent about an hour cutting the wood and building the frame. Next time we go out there we will do the cover for the top and sides of the lean-to.

I wanted to share my progress and see if you had any advice on how to improve the area. We have the opening facing the south, and eventually will make a fire wall near the shelter. We have a water source near by but I dont plan on ever having to use it, but it does have fish in it!

We made a crossing over a beaver damn to get to it!

Do not drink or even try to purify or filter that water near the beaver dam. You will get giardia.

Other than that, I love me some wilderness survival. Keep us updated!

Haha.

There's a guy who's getting a big dollowing on youtube. His channel is PrimitiveTechnology. Anyone ever check that out?

I have skills to do all of that, but no land.

And I dare not do it on public propery because it's prob illegal.

They are beautiful and naturally occurring!

I had paranoid buthe didn't want to cut any of it so we used the cheap rope we had to start.

A tent?

Not real clear what you're trying to accomplish here. Are you doing this to better prepare for a survival situation or just cause it's fun? Don't get me wrong, I made some badass stick forts when I was a kid, I'm just not getting what motivates an adult to do it.

There is an Austrian outdoors chick on YouTube that I follow that built a pretty impressive outdoor camp, similar to what you are doing.

Here is her playlist of building her shelter from start to finish. Hope it helps/gives you some ideas.

The biggest problem is the logs you cut will rot quickly in southern LA. Fun time killer but a good blue tarp and some rope will make a better rainproof shelter for this area. Raise an area with some dirt to help keep a dry spot to camp on.

I'm doing it mainly to kill time on the weekends. I love camping so it's a little more challenging than just going pitch a tent.

If you are not in a hurry and just taking your time, then I would build a platform.
