Looking at buying a Gravely ZTR and I am down to 2 models - one with a stamped deck and the other with a welded deck.

Other than number of cutting positions and price, that is the real difference in the 2 models.

The welded deck model is $800 more.

If my lot is only an acre, can I justify spending $800 more for the welded deck?

You'll be fine for a long time with a stamped deck cutting a residential acre yard with no real terrain.

Mine is welded cause that's how i roll

I sell Gravely lawn mowers. the XL series has more than just a fabricated deck although that is the main advantage. It has a rebuildable trans-axle, which means if it breaks it cay save you $ down the road. With the ZT series you will have to replace the entire transaxle if it breaks which can run about $1000 with labor, where as the other can have broken parts changed. also the xl has a slightly larger gas tank and heavier duty frame, armrests, and a few other small upgrades.

Do yourself a favor, whatever you buy, before it cuts a blade of grass, lift it up and completely coat the deck and blades with an entire can of spray silicone or PAM.

Drill a hole and install one of those 10$ hose attachments if you don't have one.

After you mow, attach hose turn blades on and it cleans out really well.

Run for a minute or so with the water off to dry.

If you have a good area you can spray silicone through the hose hole and recoat.

It will NEVER rust out.

Also... Buy the welded deck.

Thanks, Lumberman!

Maybe Gravely should put all that wisdom you just shared on their website.

Thank you for the tips!

Both models come with the port for the hose but I wouldn't have known to run the blades to dry out the deck.

I wouldn't have known to spray the deck. Thanks!

Spraying the deck isn't a necessity, but by God does it make cleaning so much easier later on.

I kick myself every time I fire up the weedeater for not giving it the same treatment before use.

I do it every time, but we also winch em up and pressure wash after every mow. A few acres with a couple dogs will do a number on a deck.

Honestly, once a year is more than 99.999% of mowers will ever see. Most die before the deck does.

That's the biggest difference with a good mower, you can keep it for a lifetime with General maintenance.
