Headed to Winter Park the first week in April. It's been almost 15 years since the last time I've seen the slopes, and am unsure of what to expect weather-wise. More importantly, what would you wear for Spring skiing?

I was looking at heavy winter ski jacket until someone mentioned that it may be too warm for it. Would a soft-shell be the better option?

I figure the jackets and such have become alot more hi-tech over the years and am hoping I can get away with only a couple layers on the slopes. (Looking at the Patagonia Capilene for the base layers, and a lightweight fleece as the mid but only if I need it)

What says TD?

It will be relatively warm in the day, quite cold at night. It will be in the 40's during the day there and no need to spend a ton on a lot of gear. Get a good base, something light to go over the top.

Buy a decent jacket that has a inner fleece part and an outer shell. Then just bring an straight sweetshirt if you need more than that. Same with the bibs. If its over 25 degrees you will not need but one layer underneath. I always liked to feel chilly on the ride up the lift then you won't sweat so much coming down.

I would just have a light waterproof jacket or shell, and a good base for the most part. A fleece would be perfect except they may get soggy if it isn't water repellent but bring one for the nights, and in case if does cloud up and snow/rain. You are going to get hot skiing in Co during April. 40's and 50's in the mountains, and that sun reflecting will burn your arse too. Prepare for sun burn conditions.

Thanks for the advice; I might head to the Backpacker after work and see what kind of lightweight jackets they have. Get a feel for what size I will be needing.

Sounds like it may be pretty similar conditions to when I was in Breck in early January. All I would wear on the slopes was long sleeve Under-Armor and Nike compression pants....then my ski jacket and ski pants...and I was sweating. So don't layer too much, you'll regret it.

Also invest in good gloves and socks. Seriously. I went to Breck with "hiking" socks...BIG mistake. Bought me some legitimate ski socks when I was there...night and day difference, felt SO much better.

Really all you will need. I had a cheap Columbia parka, and just used the outer waterproof shell most of the time. Better to be a little chilly on the ride up because you will sweat your balls off coming down the slope.

Yep, you don't want to keep going back to stash stuff. Start with a very good base layer and you can't go wrong.
