On my new Shimino 3000 reel it is hard when I first turn the handle after casting? If works great after that. Is there something wrong or will it loosen up after a while?

Is the bail locked down all the way?

Manually flip the bail , don’t use the handle to flip it . Less twists in the line that way.

It will loosen up after a while. My newest Diawa had the same issue out of the box. After about a hundred retrieves it loosened up.

If it doesn't loosen up, remove the spool and get a little very light oil on the main shaft.

After thinking about it I believe this is how I did it 35 years ago when I fished last. I am debating which hand I held the rod and the reel in back then also. Hopefully it will come back when I actually start fishing again in a few months.

With a spinning reel, if you are right-handed, you hold the rod in your right hand and reel handle with your left, unless you have some particular malady or autism that makes you want to do it differently.

Never understood this. Do you use a left handed bait caster or conventional offshore too? Just curious because I have friends who do this exact thing. But they can't explain WHY they switch hit with the spinner.

I'm a lefty and hold every rod in my left and crank with my right hand. What difference does it make if the reel is on top or bottom of the rod?

A lot. There's no combination of English words that can explain it. I only wish I could use lefty bait casters so the rod would be in my dominant hand, but I have tried and it just doesn't work. Any righty reeling a spinner with his right is doing wrong, period.

I do. I am with you about how the naming convention is set up. Left-handed reels seem like they should be right-handed reels. I started using left-handed reels way back when I primarily bass-fished. Several pros back then said they preferred to eliminate the wasted motion when casting and then switching hands by using a left-handed reel, particularly when flipping or pitching. So I decided to try it and it didn't take long with the casting reels since I always had used spinning reels that way. Now I find it awkward to go the other way.

Exactly, Why do one thing for a spinning reel and another for a casting reel?

Raises hand, will do it your way when helping a client but I like to reel with right hand.

They are universally interchangeable so you can move the handle from one side to another. I only ever had one spinning reel that was not, it was a cheap ultralight combo I picked up at Walmart at the last minute on a rainbow trout fishing trip.

I have hope that one day you'll be a real fisherman.

I started switching about 5 years ago, after asking myself why I cast then switch hands. I only by LH baitcasters now.

My favorite is political ads that show the candidate taking his children fishing in an idyllic pond where the kids are shown using spinning reels on top of the upside down rod and reeling with their right hands.

My favorite example. :12 mark Those kids have never used those reels before.

Don't forget that they are reeling backwards , commercial sunday night showed one with a spincast upside down reeling backwards.
Multiple times a year one in my boat fishes with it upside down. Had one back the handle off fighting a fish reeling backwards
