I really just want a handheld but no one around here carries them (I miss you radioshack). I hit every electronics store this afternoon and three truck stops. No luck. Since I have to order one, what should I get? As far as stationary with mics, what's a good compact brand? I'm not looking to blow up other users' speakers but I wouldn't mind having decent range/power either.

Why CB? It's limited, prone to interference, and full of, shall we say, dumbasses.

Uniden makes a good unit.

If you want a CB that receives and transmits at an optimal level, go to a CB shop, buy the unit and antenna from them, and get them to tune it.

I don't know of a handheld CB that's worth a shite, they won't talk very far any way if they're still made. Galaxy radios 939, 929 or with ssb 949/959/979 are pretty good if you're looking for one for a vehicle,, cobra 29 or 25 are also still decent. Most truck stop shops are rip offs and will f up your radio. Copper electronics but don't let them tune it, bells cb in fla if you want a tune/alignment. It's redneck backwoods shite having a 102" whip on your ride, but it has saved me a few steps with traffic and idgaf. not to mention I've talked to a dude in Australia and ireland, I think that's cool.

Not a handheld but my Galaxy 55 is a bad mofo. Been peaked and tuned dead keys 2w and swings 55w which is more than enough to get out there. When I really want to talk I kick on the 2500w linear behind it. Wilson 5000 antenna because a 102" whip (the absolute best CB antenna) don't look right on the mirrors of the Pete.

Cobra, Midland, Galaxy, Connex, Uniden, and Ranger all make quality radios. Try Bells CB Shop online. Stay away from Radio Active Radios if you are shopping online

There is a forum named Mauldroppers that you will find a lot more info on this subject from.

Had me a Cobra 29 with duall fire sticks on the mirrors of my 91 F-250. Of course only one antenna was hooked up because duals made my range worse. Never was a fan of a whip

Galaxy and Cobra. Get a TX Star linear for more power. I think Uniden makes a solid small one too.

I have a Galaxy 959. Haven't hooked it up in the new truck though, but it has been a great radio over the 10 or so years I have owned it. Had it hooked up to a Wilson 1000 and an external speaker. I got all of my stuff from GI Joe's Radio

99 yr old guy at our church was a radio operator in WW2. Was actually on a B-29 for the final bombing mission of the war that actually dropped ordinance. Something I have always thought is really cool.

When he built up enough of a nest egg from his second career as a dentist. He built a home on one of the highest points in Alabama, and probably the tallest personally owned tower in the state to hook up to his radio. He still talks regularly to people around the world, he named off like 13 countries last time we talked about it.

Sorry, your post about distance made me think of that.

Some of the jeep trails and 4 wheeling parks require them. That's all I'd use it for.

I use waze for traffic and cops.

I have a Midland somewhere with a wipe. If you want it, you can have it. Let me know and I will try to find it. Oh, it's from the late 70's.

My uncle gave me his old one when I got my first truck. Uniden grant XL hopped up with a 2000w linear and a 102" stainless whip.

When it was in his truck, we used to go out in the cane field and he'd "jump frequencies" (I think that's the term). Then everyone was speaking Spanish and shite
Once I got ahold of it though, a few buddies and I would communicate through the cb. I'd get bitched at all the time by people who knew me because I'd knock their cable out when I'd key up.

Anyway. All the people that drive trucks that I know have Cobras and one has a galaxy, but it was pricey.

As stated there are many options, I'd get one at least that has an anl/nb. Those walmart compact cheapos don't have good nb and electrical interference will be an issue.

Then get:

Cobra 19dx4
or
Uniden 520
Firestick 4
or
Wilson Superflex
President 711 external speaker

No reason to change the mic, but I like the way this one feels better than the stock plastic ones Astatic 636

You can get an amp if you want, but tuned properly, that little radio should be good for 5 miles. Tuned properly though.

You should be in it for ~$100 and have a solid setup with all of that. I'd personally go with the Cobra/Wilson
