if i get a chance to pick out of a whole litter, i usually go with the more behaved pup. the one that does the least about of biting and competing with the other dogs. i definitely skip out on the one that is bouncing off the walls and dominating the other pups. but, i like a chilled out dog that is very obedient.

These three basic “grades” correspond to Pavlov’s three basic dog temperaments or “nervous typologies” (the strong, weak, and balanced types respectively).

1. When called, does the pup solicit your attention (10 points), approach you slowly and quietly greet you (5 points), or shy away (2 points)?

2. If the pup is with litter mates, does it push its way out first over other pups to contact you (10 points), come up with one or two others to investigate you (5 points), or stay back and ignore you (2 points)?

3. When petted or picked up, does the pup get over excited (10 points), remain quiet and relaxed (5 points), or freeze fearfully, tremble, or try to escape (2 points)?

4. When you quietly back away, does the pup follow you immediately and solicit attention (10 points), pause and then follow you (5 points), or go off and ignore you (2 points)?

5. Call the pup to you. When it is beside you, clap your hands twice and loudly over its head. Does it ignore the noise and continue to solicit your attention (10 points), cower and become passive and recover quickly (5 points), or freeze and refuse to approach even when you coax it (2 points)?

6. How does the pup respond to toys? Use a yard of string with a four-inch piece of towel or paper tied to the end. Drag it past the pup as though it were a mouse hopping by. Score 10 points for an immediate response, 5 points if the pup paws tentatively or crouches and stalks first, or 2 points for no response other than looking at the “prey” or simply ignoring it.

7. How does the pup respond in unfamiliar places, say outside its kennel or home, in a park, or in a quiet yard? Does it explore actively but with some caution (10 points), does it freeze, cower, or attempt to hide somewhere (2 points), or does it run around wildly exploring things and not calming down quickly (5 points).

this isnt my writings but supposedly you need to find a dog somewhere in the middle to higer range. i have never used all of these methods but it seems pretty interesting.

i do know mississippi highway patrol does not play around.

also, when you think you are in the middle of no where, you still have a few miles to go. i think they pump sunshine into lumberton mississippi.

you're a good dad.

try a couple of those things that article said. supposedly mid to high is where puppy should be for all around dog.

i dont think you can go wrong at all.

i dont know much at all but i do read a lot on here and go to different web pages and forums regarding dogs. i have had a few different hunting dog breeds in my life and these are my favorite all around dog.

I read that test and then went and picked out my Kemmer Cur. He failed miserably

But I still got him because I liked him and there is no sure fire test to tell if a puppy will become a great hunting/obedient/faithful dog.

I'll second that. Mine will come running if my wife or daughters call him and just looks at me like I'm crazy. But he's coming around.

Great looking pup! My wife just walked by and looked over my shoulder saying how "cute he is." Now she wants another dog. Thanks.

My dad has always told me to look at their feet and tounge. I always see which one responds the best. The roll over trick mentioned above is money. The pups that are "playful and outgoing" are the ones who are typically the toughest to train. Though you don't want the lazy frick in the corner.
