Emergency food is so damn expensive

Not sure if its a good deal, but I could never justify paying those high prices for emergency food

I wonder if folks who have made their own 5 gallon buckets of emergency food would think 99.00 is expensive.

spen 99 on on cheap can foods and seasoning. In Emergency you would be surprised what you will eat.

Seasoning can vegies and neighborhood squirrels

If anyone is serious about stockpiling food, The Latter Day Saints have canneries all over the country. It's mostly very basic, staple foods, but it's super cheap...like 6 months supply for $200 per person cheap.

You would be eating rice, beans, pasta, oatmeal, potatoes, bread (do it yourself from wheat), apple slices, carrots, etc. It comes in #10 cans, and most of the food has a 30 year shelf life. Some of the food you can buy prepackaged, some you have to can yourself.

They sell it here at the local Walmart for about $75. I've been tempted to try one out. Been selling it for a couple of years. They also have similar products with all breakfasts, etc.

I've got bullets. I don't need a five gallon bucket. Just a skillet.

It would probably come in handy for some temporary problem, like being stranded but hoarding isn't a good strategy to survive long term.

Damn thats cheap. I'm not a big prepper other than basic hurricane essentials, but I may consider buying some of that b/c of the shelf life and lack of cost

Well yeah where you are stranded is a different meaning. For me stranded would mean a few mikes from an exit with a McDonalds.

Their religion requires you stockpile food and supplies for a certain amount of time. Wherever you find a large Mormon population you will find survival supplies.

You say it like it would be fun.

I pray nothing bad happens for many reasons, perhaps most of all because I wouldn't want to have to survive a Louisiana summer without AC.

Now, if I was in Alaska like Roger...

Could you feed yourself otherwise for 3 dollars a day? If you can't, it's a good deal. If so, it isn't

That was my understanding as well. I'm not a doomsday kind of guy, but for $400+ I purchased 6 months of food (2 people) that will last 30 years.

Emergency food isn't a bad idea here. Not a month but a week or so. Avalanche, earthquake or getting stranded on an island for a week are all possibilities. Most folks keep a week or so of food at their cabins. Sometimes the seas keep you trapped for weeks at a time.

I was strictly talking about the weather. Do you remember Louisiana summers? Now imagine no air conditioning.
