So I drove down I-10 across the MS/LA line today

and the flooding is pretty intense. Very close to coming onto the interstate, which means the woods are covered in 3-5 feet of water for hundreds of square miles around there.

What does this do to the animal population? Negligible effect? I'd think it would decimate some species....

I think you are underestimating the intelligence of the animals and their ability to swim. There is a ton of land underwater, but there is even more that is high and dry.
