All the extra CMP drama is just so they can drop ship to your house rather than an FFL being involved. At least that's what I heard.

Every man oughta have a garand regardless of where it comes from. They are extremely nice rifles.

Nice looking rifle with the been there look. Checked out the RTI prices on M1 carbines-ouch! The Garand prices varied a lot. Search for these on Gunbroker and compare. Some are fixed price and others are auction. Just another option.
Just a note: Ammo for Garands has a certain pressure curve.

I bought a CMP Garand from a gun show table many years ago. The guy had the paperwork from CMP. So glad I got it when they were very affordable.

Ordered 1,000 rounds of ammo from CMP for some ridiculous price like $250. Came in 4 ammo cans enclosed in a wooden/wire case. Still working on it.

Big point there.

Like I said, I used S&B 30.06 ammo specifically for the Garand. PPU also makes specific ammo, and it's labeled. Surplus ammo is getting hard to come by, and last I saw was no cheaper than those (and those were the 2 cheapest new manufactured ammo brands I could find). I've gone to several sites, and those are the 2 recommended affordable choices.

This is what I got

This is the PPU

If you live within a reasonable drive to the CMP South it’s well worth the trip. Picked up a service grade M1917 their first weekend open in ‘24 and they had some great stuff in inventory.

The staff is awesome and really knows their stuff. I already have a Garand but picking one out at the CMP would be a rite of passage, in my opinion.

What is now CMP was the DCM program(Director of Civilian Marksmanship). My father and I each got a Garand in the early 80s for around $125 each plus misc charges after all the paperwork and jumping thru hoops. Mailed to the Post Office from Anniston. H&R and a SA both beautiful rifles. No internet back then, what you got was the luck of the draw. Still have them both.

Still luck of the draw if you order, but the prevailing opinion is that the rifles are nicer than the "grade" description would have you belive. Has certainly been true for the few I've seen / shot.

If you live within a few hours of either of the CMP stores, that is the way to go. You can handle them, inspect them in person, and knowledgeable people can answer any questions you have. I am fortunate enough to be 2 hours away from one.

I shot one at the Tuskegee Natl Forest and it was pretty cool at the tight groups you could put together at 100 years with iron sights
