Keeper fish. They always move closer during these months. But I'm seeing them in places now I've never seen them my entire life.

Definitely beyond a shadow of a doubt those stores aren't in federal waters so season would be open.

Edit: Too far for state snapper obviously. It was a bit rough for tuna and 'hoo I guess.

It's not that simple, boss.

With the emergency rule, I feel like the state and feds are starting a pissing match with the recreation fishermen as the targets. I wouldn't mind the uncertainty so much if I fished out of Venice, but out of Fourchon, it's going to basically throttle us really hard on when we can get to the decent fish.

I know that the reds are moving in closer and closer, but you're going to fill your limit with fish we'd normally release. I guess 3 two-pounders is better than nothing, but you have to either stay close or catch on the way back in. I don't know. I just feel like my ability to fish is being squeezed on both sides now.

Report from Venice was limits at rigs in East Bay after the fog lifted enough to get out. Don't know size.

Let me give you some advice. Target something else. No sense beating yourself up over 2-3 fish. It sucks I know, but we are going to have to suck it up this season. Hopefully only this season. I got away from fishing for them a while back. I rarely spend more than 30 mins fishing for them. Alot of times I'd have somebody drop a jig down and catch them while we made bait.

When fed waters open will you be able to go out and fish these waters during the week then come back to dock through state waters that are closed? Or are you getting the worst of both scenarios? Smaller snapper on the weekends only except two larger Snapper and don't fish 3- 10 miles out except on the couple of weekends of open Federal Waters.

Hmm. Interesting question.

We've been doing this for years. We only occasionally target the big boys, but we typically just catch our reds between grouper and cobias. Hopefully we have better luck trolling this year. It seemed like every time we got the itch, the seas would pick up.

Edited to add: the other problem is that the dinks have taken over the rigs to the point that you can't find other species. I guess we could stick to free-lining for mangroves and casting for lemons. Sink a heavy one for the groupers... It's just getting disheartening to think about it.

Seems like it's going to suck harder than usual if they go through with shortening the federal season. Maybe it's time to pick up shop and move to Venice.

They've created a quagmire for the recreational fisherman. I really don't think it was the answer for the state to do what it did. I know they wanted to disrupt the status quo, but the way they went about it has left us in a total lurch. At this point, I would have preferred the state had let that sleeping dog lie.

When I have time I'm going snapper fishing, if I get a ticket so be it.

5 pounds of meat isn't worth the hassle for me.

Hindsight is 20/20. We can't go back now. The message has been sent. It might hurt a bit for a while, but what really are we losing? A 27 day season was really not worth saving, IMO.

If I make 30 trips this year and get caught twice I'll take it. I don't do it for the meat.

I'd say I agree, but 3 dink snapper isn't very enticing, either. It's become a pissing match between the state and the fed, and we're all getting rained on.

Are you sure about this? Are tickets their only enforcement action?

Also, if it isn't about the meat, you can legally catch and release all day regardless of the law changes.

If they are claiming that they do not recognize our new state rules. Then why are they punishing us with the short season?

Also, I do not believe it is legal for the fed to make the law different for each state.

Dude--the people wanted this. There are surveys saying so. So it is more like a pissing match between us and the feds, not the "state" and the feds. Getting upset at the state is exactly what the feds want at this point.

Because those caught during the state season would still be held against the federal quota. To keep from overshooting that quota, they'll shorten the fed season.

This isn't true at all.
