Still in the running so far:

Sig
FN
Beretta
Glock

I think Glock will win but I think Sig has a legit shot also. Beretta and FN don't have a chance imo.

I think the Sig wins because the gun is actually more modular. And this is a race for a modular handgun.

My buddy in the SEALS says they prefer Glock over everything else

Looks like a Glock military coming

I like the FNX Tactical in 45. I also like the Glock platform for a striker fired pistol, although the Walther is a smoother shooter imo.

What pistols are FN, Sig, and Glock submitting for the selection process?

They've really put a lot of groundwork into modular pistols. From the not so well received P250 line to the much more positively reviewed P320.

Sig P320
FN is listed as a polymer striker fired (no model # yet)
Glock 17 & 22

After seeing how the Army did carbine evaluations and ACU camo replacement, it'll be a miracle if this isn't screwed up.

This will be won and lost in the procurement department, just like all things government.

Just think how ridiculous this whole thing is. They're dicking around with guns that, at least for some, have decades of R&D. The brass never waste an opportunity to get a new toy.

Let's hope not -- Glock prices would go higher (for the civilian consumer) and availability of Glock 19 & 17 would drop (for civilian consumers).

Are they considering keeping the M9?

It is. The M9A3 should have been selected given any objective reasoning. The fact that existing inventories of some parts could be used and little extra training for armorers all while getting the new guns cheaper than current M9A1's should have been a no-brainer.

Ok, although I read the linked article, I've not done any other research. Consequently I'll admit my lack of information. Having said that, what's the difference between a "Modular Handgun System" and the usual handguns we're all familiar w/ e.g. the Glock Models 17 and 19?

Not surprising. Military arms channel is doing a series of torture tests (water, sand, dirt, mud) currently and the M&P 9mm failed it pretty badly.
