I had a new scope put on a savage 7/08; scope mounted and bore site. Shot it this evening at the house. Shot at 25 yards. (All the room I had.). Third shot hit in 2 inch radius circle. 4th and 5th shots hit same hole, dead center left/right and 1/2 inch high

11 year old hunting Saturday with 100 to 150 yard shot. Shooting 140 grain.

Question: out at 100/150 yards, is this gun on for kill shot? (I've looked at trajectory charts but can't bring myself to a conclusion so I'm coming to the OB experts.)

TIA for any replies.

I believe a 14 year old girl killed an elk at 200 yards with a 7mm/08. I could be wrong but I thought I saw this posted a couple of days ago.

Try to find a shooting range tomorrow to take some shots out to a 100 yds. I wouldn't trust it until then.

I'm not worried about the gun being able to kill, LSUfreak... It's fine that... I'm just inquiring as to the siting of the gun in.

Thanks, LSUenvy, that's the plan. U was just curious if any OB experts could offer any insight as to where the gun may shoot now out to 100 yards based in being 1/2 inch high at 25.

I never shoot a iving thing unless I know my gun is on at at least 50 yards but usually I check at 100. Your gun should be good to go, but you should always try and shoot at 100 just to be sure. Also, 7mm-08 is a great round your kid can use even on black bear. it is plenty of gun.

Thanks, ChadRabbit... I agree. I will definitely shoot it out at 100 before he hunts. I don't think he will be able to shoot it again though before the hunt. I was just trying to get an idea as to where it may be as is out at 100/150 yards. I know it moves from 25 out to 100, just didn't know for sure how much it actually does.

1+.
I understand your current point of impact at 25 yards to be dead on w/ windage and 1/2" high. Generally speaking, for most high power loads like a 7-08, elevation dead on at 25 yards equates to approx 3" high at 100 yards. W/ your current settings, your load should be >3" high at 100 yards, but I'm not sure just HOW high. And be sure the proposed hunter does the final sight in, NOT you. I always sight in my son's deer rifle, but when he shoots it it will hit an inch or so higher.

Yes - should be about good IMO. That's not far off from how my 7-08 is sighted in and I feel confident with 100-150 yard shots no problem.

I also agree that ideally you'd shoot at 100 to be sure.

I try to sight all my rifles in 2 in high at 100 yards.

At 25 yards, your point of impact should be low if you are dead on at 100. If at 25 yards your about 1/2 high, you're going to be pretty high at 100 (I would guess)

Here's a decent illustration:

The red line is your line of sight through the scope, the blue line is the bulled trajectory. As you can see, if you're dead on at 25 yards (the two lines intersect), you will be high at 100 yards. That means if you're high at 25, you will be even higher at 100. How much higher depends on the ballistics of the round you're shooting.

Using a ballistics chart with 140gr bullet at 2800fps and a scope height of 1.5 in

You should be a hair more than 1/2" low at 25yds for a 100yd zero. 0.667" low somewhere around there.

I dont know what bullet you are using so its going to vary some.

Since you are at 1/2" high at 25yds, you will be above 3" high at 100yds

Shoot it at 100yds because I believe 3" high will be the minimum according to the chart.

You should be on the paper at 100 yds, but if you are shooting at a range where you have access to sandbags you can easily check the bore sight. First pull the bolt out of the action. Then put the rifle on sandbags and, looking through the bore, line the bore up with the bullseye on your target. Bed the gun in as best you can so it doesn't move. Then look through the scope to see if it is on the bullseye or relatively close. If not, adjust the scope until the crosshairs and the rifle bore are both looking at the bullseye. I've done this with dozens of bolt rifles and have never been more than 2 inches off the bull on my first shot. You can dial it in from there.

I've been told all my life that it's wrong, but I've always sited my rifles in at 25 yds. Walk it in to where you can hit a dime, and if anything is off dead center, let it be vertical only. Your gun will be 1 to 1.5" high at 100 and dead on at 200. I do check it occasionally at 100, but this method has not failed me in 35 years.

Set this table up with 1.5" scope over bore using a Federal Accubond 140gr with a ballistic coefficient of .485 with a muzzle velocity of 2800fps. Chart will be more accurate with more exact numbers but this will get us close.

This is what you currently have.

100 yard Zero

I would go with a 200 yard zero which will give you point black +/- 2" from 0 to 225 yards. 100 yard zero you are inside of 2" only to 175 yards. Sight in at 1 3/4" high at 100 yards. Put the crosshairs in the kill zone from 0-200 and you should have a dead deer without worry about holdover or whatnot. Edit to add if you know the max range of your shot won't be past 150 then the 100 yard zero if fine.

Not sure which ammo you have but I ran one on a 140gr core lokt and this is what it spit out:

7mm-08 Remington - 140gn Pointed Soft Point Core-Lokt - MV: 2960fps BC: 0.381

Set Sights To Shoot -0.73 Inches Low at 25 Yards for a 100 Yards Zero

Set Sights To Shoot -0.56 Inches Low at 25 Yards for a 150 Yards Zero

Thanks, reggo! that is the round that I have. I think I may go this evening and set it at 3/4 inch low at 25 yards... I am still going to have him shoot it tomorrow before the evening hunt at 100 too. again thanks to all for your time, replies and info.

I would think you would want to be at least .5 low at 25 to be on at 100. This is just my estimation though.
