Interesting quotes in article:

quote:

Back in the mid-1990s, the harvest in Louisiana peaked at more than 225,000 deer. But LDWF data show the trend since the turn of the century has been one of falling numbers of downed deer — with an estimated 139,900 killed in the 2014-15 season.

That’s a 38-percent drop in roughly a 20-year period.

More immediately, last season’s harvest reflected a 16-percent drop from the 166,200 deer killed during the 2013-14 season.

quote:

Durham estimated only 20 to 30 percent of successful hunters bother to call in their kills.

For instance, only 48,298 deer were reported killed during the 2014-15 season — a 5.8-percent decrease from the previous season.

Even when combined with harvest numbers from the WMA managed hunts and DMAP clubs, the total reported deer killed only ticked to 65,081 animals.

Durham said there have to be many more deer killed than that.

“We estimate a couple hundred thousand (hunters), and if only half kill just one deer, that’s 100,000 deer,” he said.

And he knows lots of folks hunting: The LDWF last season issued 273,541 sets of tags, the highest number on record. And those deer hunters spent an estimated 3.8 million days afield, according to the 2014-15 Louisiana Deer Report.

“I’ve got 34,000 to 35,000 guys reporting deer kills.”

The increase in wild pigs is going play hell on the deer population

Pigs and monoculture of pine trees with the underbrush being sprayed are the main culprits.

Urbanization is irrelevant compared to these.

Yeah. Nothing wrong with it but you can't argue that the lack of food affects population.

If you can't kill enough to stock your freezer from Oct 1-End of Jan, then maybe there aren't enough wood goats.

Agree 100%. Id add the lack of predator control to the list.

What predators need to be controlled?

I know too many people that use the regs as more of a guideline than actual set in stone rules. Lousisiana is full of slob hunters that are going to do what they're going to do anyway.I only kill one or two deer a year just because I dont want the meat to go bad before I eat it. With my work schedule though I hate the idea of shorter seasons because I only get so many days that I'm able to go hunting.

The sad thing is that that will probably be the serious response of many.

Then there will be people that will that claim that too many foxes are to blame.

I been saying it for years, the only difference between louisiana and other great hunting states (Kansas, Illinois, Iowa) is louisianas rifle season is too fricking long. A deer doesn't stand a chance to survive and get old in louisiana.

Lower limits, shorten rifle season and put a rack minimum on bucks, 6 point or better or something along those lines.

The main difference is the people. I love Louisiana, but let's just be honest. We are literally trashy when you look at the liter on the side of the roads. We have too many people that don't care about when or how they kill deer or even how many.

Too many people shooting the first deer that walks out, and the next one and the next one.

Coyotes may not be an issue where you are but here they are terrible. You'd be amazed at the amount of fawns on coyote can take out
