Northshore (St. Tammany). Been out and about a good bit all over the area between hunting fishing drinking or just screwing around and have never seen this before, but twice in the past week now I've seen what looks like a large black ferret running across the road. One in Madisonville last week and this morning in Mandeville saw three of them scooting across a divided four lane street.

Almost double the size of a ferret but otherwise moves the same peculiar way.

Found this pic on LA sportsman that resembles what I saw. Someone there asking the same thing but only response was an otter and they seem more thick bodied and don't quite run the same way.

Also Neither location was close to water although probably not too far from it either.

Best I can come up with is a mink. Although from what I see so far they are about the same size as ferrets but on both occasions all four of these were notably larger than ferrets.

otter. You'd be surprised athow small a mink actually is. Smaller than a ferret for sure

That is an otter but yes there are minks. Minks dive and swim, eat crawfish. I see them all the time out of the deerstand. My dad saw one chasing a big swamp rabbit but they aren't very big

Hmm. Guess so. If minks are smaller then it'd have to be an otter by default because the thing that stuck out most, aside from the weasely appearance and gait, was their size being much bigger.

mink and otters have similar gaits. I see otters all the time on my deer lease in the marsh. They love to eat clams and crabs when the tide is low.

Definitely sounds like an otter like others have said.

There are minks too though, but much smaller. I watched ine several times in Maurepas Swamp while hunting. Interesting little critters.

Sounds too large to be a mink. Probably an otter or a jaguarundi, often often referred to as an otter cat. They are very common now in south Louisiana.

Yeah I watched some otter running vids on YouTube and pretty sure that was them.

I had the impression that what I saw wasn't quite as stocky as that but wasn't close enough to say with certainty. Could have been skinny otters. It is Mandeville after all, they were probably coming back from Pilates or some shite.

Well...otters, minks, ferrets, and weasels are all in the same family (Mustelidae).

Edit: By the by, Mustelidae also includes badgers and wolverines. Very diverse family filled with ferocious little creatures.

Them minks are slick, I used to "try" to trap them in my youth.

Really? Don't know a single person that has seen one. They've never been common in Louisiana, and "very common" to me implies that we ought to have some reports of them. They aren't even "very common" in most of Texas.
