Skinner sights for a wonderful peep/arpeture sight. Very accurate. Not scope accurate but very damn accurate.

Long time lurker, just joined in order to shed some knowledge from my past experience and hopefully save some heartache.

I know vortex is highly recommended on this forum and I agree that for the price it is very hard to get any better quality, however, I broke 2 Vortex Diamondback's on my CVA Apex in .35 trying to site it in. Customer service and warranty were jam up and gave me no trouble with replacing or honoring the warranty.

My apex will not group any other bullet than a 250gr either, just as a heads up

that's pretty bad. im not too big on vortex, myself. Customers used to have us mount $50-$70 Shooter's Edge scopes on HRs and CVAs and would come back raving about them

yea needless to say i was pretty upset haha. Several people I knew where using MUCH cheaper scopes without any problems.

I was assured several times that these scopes could handle the recoil and that they were tested on .50 cals. Broke the first one and figured it was just my bad luck, after the second repeated the same failure i called it quits and swapped brands.

I have a friend that has the Nikon PS5 and a Vortex DBHP (1 model higher than what I was shopping)

He put them side by side to compare for me. He said the Nikon was clearer, sharper, and smoother to operate the mag dial. I think both are good scopes and I'd probably be happy with either, but I trust this guy's advice and think I'll go with the Nikon.

Can I ask which scope mount you used on your Apex? If you replaced the one that came with it, which size did you go with? I'd like some low rings but I'm thinking with the straight profile on the top of the CVA's I'll probably need medium for a 40mm scope.

I bought some 225gr Federal Vital Shocks on the recommendation of a buddy. He said the same thing as you basically. The lower grain bullets wouldn't group well for him with any of his 35 Whelens (he has a lever, bolt, and single shot)

If you feel like you would be happier with a Nikon then by all means go for it. Any of the scopes talked about here will do everything you need them to do. If you get the Nikon you will be just as happy.
I have never heard of a Vortex breaking because of recoil though, that's interesting. I have one on a 300 WM and a buddy has one a 300 WBY Mag and both hold zero.

These were vortex diamondback hp 4-16x42. Both held zero fine, what was breaking was something in the rear eyepiece focus adjustment. It would break and then fish eye. Take the scope off and you could hear the lens rattling around inside.

Didnt mean to hijack your thread and turn it into a vortex bashing thread, just sharing my experience

I have the Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50 on an H&R 35 Whelen and it's held up fine.

I had a lower end Pentax on it and couldn't keep it sighted in. I blamed it on the scope and replaced it with the Nikon. it turns out the screws were loose that held the rail on the gun. I put a little loc-tite on them and tightened them down and it's been fine since.

You aren't hijacking at all. Thank you for your input!
Did you see my question about which rings you used on your Apex?

Sorry I overlooked that entire post, I used DNZ game reaper one piece Medium mounts and have a 42mm scope.

Curious as to how the 225gr works for you, they weren't available when i was siting in

That is strange. I've never shot a 35 whelen but I can't imagine its recoil being more than a 300 wby mag. Me and my friend that has the 300 wby shoot ours fairly often and the scopes are holding up just fine. We both have diamondbacks.

They tend to be extremely light rifles and extremely not fun to shoot.

Only experience I can add is a VX-2 on a 300 Win Mag and it's held up great. Is there any other differences in the VX-1 and VX-2 other than the friction/1/4MOA click adjustments? I have a 4-12x44 VxFireII but mine is on a 243 and the 35 kicks a tiny bit more than the 243. The Leupold does seem brighter at dusk/dawn but I don't know is that's the lower magnification v. objective size or better light transmission.
