Scope is going on a CVA Apex in 35 Whelen

Nikon Prostaff 5 BDC - 2.5x10x40
Vortex Crossfire II - 3x9x50 (with V-brite reticle)
Vortex Diamondback BDC - 3x9x40
Leupold VX1 - 3x9x40

I will consider other options but Looking to keep cost around $200. I splurged on the Apex because the Scout was out of stock so I blew a little of my scope budget.

Im kind of leaning towards that Crossfire because of the reticle. It sure would come in handy in dark wooded areas those last 15 minutes of shooting time.

What does the OB vote for?

Whatever scope our forefathers used would be my choice for a primitive weapon. Or something similar to the one you have on your crossbow.

I don't own a crossbow but I use a single pin slider on my compound bow... I'm not sure I could rig that up on my new rifle.

I bowhunt about 90% of the time... Last year was the first time I shot a deer with a rifle since 2006. With my kids getting a little older and into hunting, I figure I'll be rifle hunting a little more to spend time with them. The 35 Whelen is a great caliber that affords me the option of hunting the primitive season. I'm still a bowhunter at heart.

I'm a whore for all things leupold, so I'd get the vx1 if I was in that delima.

Gonna be a sweet setup either way. Be ready for shoulder abuse when you go sight it in.

All joking aside, can't go wrong with Nixon. I'm not a fan of the BDC option.

Have you had any hands on with the Leupold VX-R(fire dot) line?

Vortex. I have both Crossfire and Diamondback. Their isn't much difference. The glass is good and will allow you to hunt past legal shooting hours. And the warranty is unbeatable. I like the BDC. You can go on their site and enter all the information and it shows the exact bullet drop, its really accurate. Not sure what your looking to do but V-brite is more for night hunting.

I haven't rifle hunted in many years and last year I ended up with a rifle in my hands a few times. I noticed when I was in the woods (not so much on the highline) I would lose those last 10-15 minutes of legal shooting time because I couldn't see the reticle in the scope. I figured this lighted dot would give me the option of at least knowing where the aim point is during those last few minutes of daylight. That is usually a great time for movement.

Go for it if it's what you want. It's etched I believe so you can use it with or with the V-brite. I prefer to have the BDC but it's all personal preference.

Yea I'll second the Vortex. Go with the Diamondback. I've always loved the look of a Leupold scope, I'm a sucker for that gold ring, but Vortex is really hard to beat for performance and value. Throw in some Burris Signature rings and you're good to go.

I also admit that I put one of those slip on over the stock limbsaver pads on mine. And it made a tremendous difference. Now it's actually somewhat enjoyable to shoot

Limbsavers are a great investment. I can shoot my 300WM all day with it. Completely takes the sting out of high recoil rifles.

V brite is a sales marketing plot. Not much difference at all between Crossfire and Diamondback. Id go with Nikon

Maybe I just need better glass and I would be able to see better at dusk... haha. The rifle I used last year had a cheaper Simmons scope on it.

Since this is the OB, i'd say at leasts $4,000 worth of SwarovskiZeiss.

Seriously, i'd put a 4x or 6x fixed magnification and kill.

I had a Weaver Grand Slam on an Encore 35 Whelen. Loved it. Was much brighter than my Nikon Monarch. Loved that rig.

I got a simmons scope for a new savage 22 I picked up. I ordered a Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32 for it after sighting in the simmons. I tried that simmons 8 point or whatever it was, I couldn't have that on my .22

You do now about the Vortex warranty right? If not its a lifetime warranty with no questions asked. Leupold scopes are very good but for the price of a lower end you will get much more for your money with the vortex. And if you drop that leupold and the glass breaks you have to buy a new one. If in 15 years I take a vortex scope, throw it in a fire and then beat it with a sledge hammer I can send it in to vortex and get a new one.
