You may be right about the light but with 66 year old eyes and the sun starts to go down I'll take all the help I can afford.

Some companies use high mag. and large objective lenses as a marketing tool but use cheap glass.

Typical for low light conditions your pupil is open to about 5mm - a 40mm riflescope (I use a 42mm)is still delivering more light than your eye can use at magnifications below 8x. Since most deer are shot at lower magnifications, generally a 3-9x40 will do anything you need to do in terms of low light shooting. If you want to spend more money, you are dollars and performance ahead to invest in a better quality 3-9x40, rather than jump to a 3-9x50. Quality will have a greater impact on performance.

I would go with a higher quality 3-9x40mm over a lower quality 4-12x50mm for the same price.

Redfield Revolution 3-9x50

I have this. It's a nice scope, but i'd rather have a 4x12.

I ordered the Revolution over the Prostaff. They're made in Oregon by Leupold with a great warranty. I really did like the Prostaff though.
