School me on Maurepas

Had a few hours to kill yesterday morning before the parade so I brought my Kayak down to Lake Maurepas for a little bit. I put in at one of the little outlets in Ruddock and fished the trees and back one canal. I only saw 1 or 2 fish jump the whole morning and came home empty handed.
The area is only 40 minutes from my house so I am definitely interested in figuring it out. I'm not asking for specifics, but should I focus my efforts more on the Northern side or South? I was throwing spinner baits and a shallow crank bait...
Thanks,

Feast of famine type place. Fish stack up in drains in the spring and if you catch the water right you can kill them. It's tough fishing most days though.

Ruddock can be good in late spring and summer when the drains are coming out. Focus on the swamp side mostly. In the fall the fish sometimes stack on the stumps under the interstate

Thanks. I commute down I55 a lot and always see trucks parked at the landing, but not sure how far these guys are running to find fish.
How deep is the water down there between the Interstates?

Depends but usually around 7-10 ft. Like a previous poster said focus on the swamp side. I've had days where we caught 50 in a few hours. Seemed like their was a fish on every stump. I've also had days where I didn't think they even had a fish in that place.

Morning fish school up at drains and get a limit in under 15 minutes
After that they spread out
Won't say baits
East wind rough to fish
West wind pretty good
Man this area spawns earlier than others
Old days 1980's you use to be able to fish the drains and use a rebel broke back minnow on a cane pole and limit out on 4lb bass after a rain storm at night. This days are over!

Good for catfish and panfish. Few bass but nothing to get excited about. You wouldn't believe it but have caught a 3 man limit of specks under the bridge. You'll never see those days again

Caught limits of Specs under the bridge about 2 years ago. Haven't been since.

Underrated place to fish in my opinion. Can catch fish there all year if you put the work in learning the area. Watch what the lake looks like. If Maurapas is mud, you need to go towards Laplace to find cleaner water. If water looks good, start at the entrance to the lake and work your way in. Try go when water is low and find stumps that are normally underwater. Your bigger fish are going to hold those stumps. Try using a jig with a 16th ounce weight and work your way up in weight as wind or current picks up.

Thanks again guys. Looking forward to going back. Usually don't have the time or motivation to drive 2 hours each way to fish.

As most have said, fish the outlets if the water is moving. If no water is moving, then a slow presentation around the stumps is usually your best bet. I've never been let down by a wacky rigged trickworm in a pinch.

Years ago back in the old people days at the front of I-55 canal and Maurepas you have hard bottom and stumps. The water was mixing muddy water in Maurepas and clear water from the I-55 canals. This made a perfect break line and I got my trollmotor stuck on a stump. My rod was hanging over the side with a chartreuse spinnerbait on it. I caught a 5lb bass by accident that day.
It took me 5 yrs in the to learn in back in the 1970's. Then when I moved back in 2013 it took 3 yrs to relearn it.

never fished there, but I have always found that stretch of interstate to be fascinating...seems like having a camp there would just be a dream.
