Been toying with SBRing my AR for a while.

Would you get a complete new upper or let a gun smith cut and barrel to the desired length? I'd figure the gun smith route to be a good bit cheaper, but I don't know if it's the way I should go or not

barrels are cheap, relatively speaking
I would just buy a new SBR barrel and swap it out

I just wouldn't do it. Lowers are too cheap. You're asking for a nightmare - once you Form IV/NFA the weapon, it is impossible to go back, no matter what you do.

So, do a new build or get a completely new SBR over converting an existing non-NFA AR.

Just my $0.02.

That's an option I hadn't really thought of. Is is pretty easy to change out, or something a gun smith should do?

If the barrel is lugged, it is a fairly easy swap - you have to be careful with the gas tube, and such, but handy individuals can do it. If you're dead set on doing this, I would sell your existing upper and buy a new, SBR one - just to make sure everything goes together.

It's easy. Bring it to bowie's and I'll do it

It's on only a pain if you have A Frame FSB with delta ring assembly

Any idea on a rough estimate?

I do have an A frame front site, but I'm not sure about the delta ring... It's an Ar I've had 10 years or so. Bushmaster

I can't remember what we charge. I'll check when I recover from surgery. I'd suggest getting a free float handguard and low profile gas block. The setup you have isn't the optimum setup for an SBR. What caliber? What length gas tube?

I would want to do the low profile gas block, but I'd have to check the gas tube length

bullshite. You can take a Form 1 lower back to legal by adding a barrel longer than 16. All requires is remove the parts that make it a SBR/SBS from your possession. Notify ATF with serial number of gun and request it be taken off of the registry.

I would build or buy a new upper if you planned on changing out the hand guard and gas block.

Yeah I'm thinking they'll be the way to do it. I was looking around at PSA today and they have some fairly inexpensive complete lowers

Maybe so. I probably should have said, "difficult" to go back. I still say it is more trouble than it is worth.

Other than making the rifle easier to sell, why would you want it to go back to a non sbr?

A lot of folks experience the reduced ballistic performance and increased recoil from a SBR and decide to revert back to a longer barrel.

Why would there be increased recoil? Less weight?

Glock, how short are you wanting to go?

I have to get my lower engraved on tues on a SBR .300 aac.
Also, do you have a trust set up yet? It took me 4 months to get my e-file form 1 back.

What does that have to do with recoil? I can see less weight but a gun (I'm talking rifles) with the same weight but a shorter barrel should have the exact same perceived recoil.

I was thinking 10.5.... No trust yet... I'm in the early stages of trying to decide if I want to invest the money
