Smith from the '80s or earlier is the answer, but I think they are pretty expensive now. Nothing wrong with a Ruger GP100 (my first handgun) but sold it for a Smith 66 from 1983.

The primary difference is the triggers. Try to dry fire both in double action if you have the opportunity. Some people have no preference, while others will prefer one over the other. Revolvers are expensive these days. That being the case, you may as well consider the Colts too if going up a price level isn't prohibitive. And last, there is nothing new under the sun -- the only common revolvers worth having are Smiths, Rugers, and Colts.

Is this a reputable online dealer?

Yes they are good to go. I have ordered from them over the years with no issues.

I have a Ruger GP100 MC, love shooting it and even with hot .357 mag it's not uncomfortable on bare hands. Probably more flinch inducing for those shooting next to me.

I’ve owned three Taurus revolvers and all have been great. No hesitation about Taurus revolvers. That’s your option for a budget revolver.

Ruger and Smith are of course great. I own a Ruger LCR which is way smoother than my comparable Taurus snubnose.

I just ordered this from Buds bc I wanted a Smith:

I love my GP100

Very well made. As long as it is taken care of I’m confident my great great grandchildren could still shoot it

CDNN has a 5" 629 that I'm almost tempted on. $899 with rebate.

I'm looking at that same gun with a 5 inch barrel at Bud's. All their guns ship free and their prices are good.

629 is a .44 mag

Typically about $100 or so more than the 686s

ETA: I have one 629 but it's an 8 3/8' barrel.

Would like a 4 or 5" one

That’s a pretty gun and as good a price as you’ll find anywhere.

You might find it for a similar price at academy or Basspro which would save you the FFL cost.

I just bought the Ruger GP100 6”

It’s like, my favorite purchase ever.

So much fun to shoot

I have the exact same one, even the 6" barrel. Bought in either 2011 or 2012 and love it.
