What price range you talking about? Hard to go wrong with the Leupold, but keep in mind that there is a huge difference in their low end scopes and their high end scopes. I would go VX III.

Nikon Monarch can be a good cheap scope. Zeiss Conquest is another.

Yep,

I've got three. One on an 1892 lever action, my .270 bolt, and my 45-70.

$200-$600

The $200 jobs are really nice though. It would be just fine for whitetail on the Ruger you've got.

I am so happy you started an optics thread.

Holding Zero?
Price?
Parallax?

What is the best value scope that can hold zero?
Please no Swarovski posts.

Do not low ball on a scope for your rifle. You will pay dearly in the future (pun intended)

THis. People look at scopes and think they can cut some corners. DON"T DO IT!

.....and whatever he puts on that Ruger, you have to use Loctite!

I learned my lesson about this with the 45-70. They have a little kick. I mounted mine and took my first shot, had it fly of the rail, hit me in the eye, do a few tumbles, then land on the deck behind me.

I picked it up, mounted again, and used the stuff.

I use Loctite before I shoot with a new scope from now on.
