I’m looking at getting my son a 12ga semi auto for his birthday. Was looking strongly at a franchi affinity 3.

This is what I use, and I have loved it. It kicks, but is light as a feather. Easy to take apart and maintain. I have the 3 (they do have a 3.5) in realtree max 5. It is an extremely great value gun that I expect to hand down to my son.

Retay used to be a sweet deal for what you got.

Then the Turkish economy tanked and the jacked prices to keep up.

Now with sales sluggish you can call up a store like reeds and get a benelli for almost the same price as a retay.

Also, pretty much all new model benellis have the spring upgrade in the rotational axis for the bolt. I.e. no Benelli click.

My local store made it right. I think my first one had been dropped, hard.

FWIW, with that price range I would go with Tri-Star. I use one often for clays and it does a great job. They run right around $500 too so you'll save a few bucks but it'll be a gun your son will use for a long time.

ETA: $500-$700 for what you're looking for

+1 for the M2 for a lifer gun that can do-all.

From what I've seen in handling them, Retay is Benelli copy asking you to pay nearly Benelli prices without the quality of Benelli......just bite the bullet and go with the known commodity. I'm a decade in with my M2, it's been nothing but a boss.

That said, a buddy is one season in with a new CZ 3" auto (also inertia) that's doing well for him and feels much nicer than CZ's of old. Would seem a nice gun for the price point < $700, I believe.

***update***

Went to Bass Pro yesterday and bought him the camo affinity 3. It was between that, the a300, and a black m2.

The a300 felt a little bulky (so does my extrema 2).

The m2 was nice but obviously more expensive and only in black.

The guy at the counter was great and recommended the affinity 3. It was the only one they had left so he gave me 10% off for it being a display.

I know it doesn’t matter, but personally I think you made the right decision.

A have a previous model m2 and love it to death, but I wouldn’t buy the newer model M2 over the affinity.
