Anyone here ever do this themselves?
Was it a major pain in the arse?

Might be easier to just replace the seat

Installing new skins isn't hard. An air stapler is a good thing to have and use Monell/stainless staples.
Just remove the original vinyl, have it copied at an upholstery shop and ask them to leave plenty of extra so you can get a good grip to stretch it. After its stapled in place you trim the excess off.

I had my leaning post seat redone at airline upholstery in Gonzales for $150, they did a great job and I didnt have to go through a learning curve on how to fit it on there.

Yea, small quantity of pieces I would just let the upholstery shop install. In my case, I was doing the entire interior of my ski boat so I saved close to $1500 by doing the install myself.

We redid all the vinyl and converted all of the cushions to removable cushions while we were in the process. Was very easy if you have access to a good sewing machine. Take the cushions apart, and use the pieces as templates for the new vinyl. Once they were reassembled, we sewed in industrial Velcro on the cushions and backs. Once we had the boat home from a day on the water, we would pull all the seat cushions and bring inside. They looked brand new 6 years later when I sold the boat. Just an idea while you are at it.
