Is this as easy as YouTube makes it seem? I hate messing with electrical crap but this seems about as easy as changing out a light bulb or replacing a battery. Anyone had any advice or input?

Yes it's that easy unless you forget to turn off the main. Then the degree of difficulty increases dramatically

Pretty hard to keep a steady hand when that happens

Well its the same difficulty, as in the same process. you might just have a difficult time completing it from the hospital/casket

If you don't feel comfortable don't do it. An open panel box is not a place for sweaty shaky hands.

Even if you flip the main, you still have heat in that panel coming in from the meter base... Be careful

no its not difficult just make sure the main is off
remove the wire and then remove and replace breaker. but typically circuit breakers don't need to be replaced, its doing its job and something else is wrong i.e. short in wire or outlet is bad
whats going on with the circuit?

We just had bad rain/thunderstorms. That's when it tripped and when I reset it the stove range is not turning on. Nothing else has changed so my guess is we got a power surge or something. I don't know.

You might need to disconnect the range and test the outlet (or wires if it's not hard wired) to check voltage. May have fried your stove/range.

So just a volt meter to the outlet if there is one? If it isn't reading then it must be breaker. If it is then appliance is shot?

This is why I chose mechanical engineering dammit and going management.

Stove is probably hard wired. I haven't ever seen one that plugged into an outlet. Test it at the panel with a multimeter or one of those testers that lights up and beeps.

I had a 6 month old GFI go out a couple weeks back

Well you need to rule out the appliance as the problem, then the outlet if there is one, then the breaker. Some appliances are hardwired you can change the breaker but could still have something wrong downstream.

This is just the stove hood. I'll check when I get home

May be a dumb question but how do you rule out appliance without power to it?

If you can successfully reset the breaker without the appliance being connected to it, but it trips when it's connected there is an issue with the appliance.

If you cannot successfully reset the breaker without the appliance being connected but there is an outlet, there is a really good chance it is the outlet.

Like the guy said earlier breakers rarely fail.

Like the light and fan? Not range/oven?

Basic stove hoods are generally not on a dedicated circuit. There are probably some wall sockets on the same circuit. Any wall sockets not working also? GFI wall sockets?

Turn breaker off.
Disconnect hot wire from breaker.
Try to turn breaker on.
If it turns on test for power between breaker and neutral bar.

You can also try putting the hot wire for the hood on a similar size breaker nearby if it will reach. Turn that breaker on and see if it the hood works.
