That shite was glued down very well and it took me hours to get all the glue up from a very small area.

I usta lay tile, vinyl flooring, and formica tops years ago. Whenever we had to remove old vinyl flooring, we'd use a heat torch to soften the glue under the vinyl and then pull up the vinyl as the glue softened up. Sometimes this worked very well and sometimes it didn't.

Like everyone else said, rotary or demo hammer with chisel bit. Also get hearing protection, it can be very noisy. And a dust mask.

They used some badass adhesive back in the 50's, ran into this same problem doing my parents' floors. Some of it even had a tar paper-like backing which was a real mess to get up.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of that stuff. Hafta use kerosene to get it off your hands and tools. It came in 5 gallon metal buckets and was about the same as the old "black mammy" coating folks used to waterproof the outside of their basements. (Not trying to be offensive here, but that's what it was called back then.) I hated it, too. It would get hot and seep up through the joints in floor tile. Until clear adhesives finally came along, this was the only adhesive available. Glad that stuff is long gone.

And make sure to wear long sleeves and a face shield.

Yep, especially old 9" tile. Ours was the sheeted linoleum, so we were good. I wonder how many people rip up asbestos tile without knowing what they're unleashing. :cough:

Is it really that bad considering the fibers are glued together? Wouldn't think it would be nearly as bad as asbestos insulation.

Me neither, but there's still a risk from particulates, I'd have to leave it to the pro's to remove.
