good lord ya'll over think some stuff. Spray straight bleach on it. Let bleach sit for 5 minutes, spray with water to rinse. Profit.

This worked pretty well. Emptied it this morning and the smell was pretty close to gone. Thanks for the suggestion.
And thanks to everyone else for the replies as well.

Vinegar works best for me - especially if you want non-toxic residue.
I'd lead with a warm soapy bath - flush it with lots of water, then maybe go a whole gallon of vinegar - let that sit closed up for about a day, then flush with water again.

I clean my ice chests with water. If it has anything that won't come out with water, bleach and scrub brush. If it smells after that, soak in bleach.
I've got my big one outside that someone borrowed and left tuna blood in for 4 days or so, I hope to god that smell comes out. The blood was a bitch to get out. And somehow the whole inside of the chest is yellowed.

Some smells just wont come out with water based cleaners. The smells are the result of fat breakdown and need a hydrocarbon solvent to remove. I have used MEK before and it worked well.
After washing with soap and water and drying wipe the entire inside surface with paper towels and MEK. Make sure to discard the towels and use a clean one frequently. Do this 2-3 times and then leave in the sun to evaporate any remaining MEK. Wear gloves, goggles, and only do this outside. Also the paper towels are now soaked in a flammable substance so dispose of them properly (metal trashcan with a lid out side of the home).
After the MEK wipe down just about any of the suggestions in this thread can be used if you want to get any remaining smell out.
